Into the Lake

"Haha!" At her words, a few members of his own crew blinked. The sailor clearing plates, one of the soldiers in the corner. Both settled back at her second statement, however. But de'Varrin was genuinely amused.

"Were it that easy, Captain. When I say the original is in the Armoury, I don't mean the ship-board one. But the one back at home, in the Palace of Meadowford. We'd be hard pressed to get you that one, especially with the orders I have. However, I'll most readily hand over my copy. I can attest that it's copied word for word, even if I don't know what even a quarter of the words and symbols mean... I know, because I copied it myself. Just like every other captain of this ship has since we first started crewing it."

"I hope that would suffice, at least for the time being. And I'll definately query the Duke about mooring alongside your vessel once I speak with him again. I doubt he'll have much against it. I think he'll be quartering with someone landside... I can't say that the man took to airtravel all that well. Sheer Thessilaneian will kept him from heaving over the side the first day we hit rain." Here the Captain grinned, then knocked back his drink. It was a point of pride for him and his men, that they didn't sick up when the weather got rough.

In any case, that was the offer de'Varrin had for her, since it was generally the best he could do with the original piece being two countries behind the at the time being. He hoped it would do, for now anyway.

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters... But with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you chose. But get drunk. - Charles Baudelaire

Yet again, she listened and nodded. "I should like to speak to the Duke of it, then. The original would hold great value to me. I would be willing to provide a partial translation of what you have, but.." A slight shrug. "Not to be rude," she apologized, smiling once more.

"But enough of that. If you think that your ship is unique, then you have a lot to learn, Captain," she stated pleasantly, somehow managing to do so without a patronizing tone. "We come from a continent far to the south. There, such things are relatively commonplace, at least, in the hands of powerful people. Your ship is of an older design, but built well; many of them still see use in transporting people." It wouldn't be difficult for the other captain to infer 'troops' in place of people.

"The Legacy's design is older still, but still built, especially for private use; she has a seaworthy hull, rowers, and a modest cargo capacity, and therefore, a great deal of versatility. Again, as you know, given the delivery of water."

"There have been rumors of other ships making it this far, but as a rule, most are not sent on such long voyages. Most of the aforementioned powerful people rather like to keep their assets closer to home. Historically, there have been problems with piracy, and that is one possible explanation for the Hawk's Talon's presence here," she guessed. "Thankfully, the state of such affairs is rather better, today," she concluded. With that, she leaned forward to continue eating. With all the talking, she was lagging behind; Mister Sydney was almost done. She'd have to pass off a question or two to him.
