Shards of Eternity

Shards of Eternity

He scribbled furiously on a piece of old, tattered parchment, seated at the bar not far from where Pritchard wiped at the countertop. Every so often, the man who'd seated himself away from the rest glanced upward to study those that had come and gone. There had been as much recognition in the man's face as there had been emotion. It was like any other evening at the Broken Dagger, save the constant muttering that scraped away at the last bits of his remaining will. Despite what he'd considered a valiant effort, attempts to thwart this endless mental struggle were little more than an exercise in futility. For the first time in more than a week he'd shaven and bathed. To Donovan's credit, he did not appear as worn as he'd felt. There was a long moment's pause as he turned to observe a conversation between a human woman, and a Drake who'd so comfortably settled himself inside the tavern. Parched, broken lips twitched in a smile, and some unspoken thought of his brought the faintest glimmer of mirth in such dark times. The fact that such races could coexist without hostility was a wonder that had often been taken for granted around here. To him, it was a bond that was unforgettable, for obvious reasons to some. There was only one word he knew to describe it.

Remarkable.

Alas, the distraction was but a moment before he'd turned back down to his writings.

Yahweh,

Following you,
Searching for these answers
That never come
I've fallen, a broken angel
And lost the war fate has won.

Seeking you,
The blood I've spilled and shed,
A life that was once clearer
Combat my foe, the unknown
Alas, it reveals upon the mirror.

O, my soul,
I am weary in the aftermath
Forking this path, now my choice
What destiny has proclaimed
To be the truth; your healing voice.

To trust in legend,
Walking hand in hand, I pray
That as I fall, you'll catch me
And as your word has said
That he as your child, blessed forever be.

Father of mine,
I am captured by your love
You're the air that I breathe
Mend this broken heart
Cleanse my soul, and set the faithless free.

For so long,
I've bled my confession
Captivated by your grace
I long, my Abba
For this day, I seek to gaze upon your face.

Facing my destiny,
I've found the only answer
The object of mine eye
That for a man to live
It is first, that he should die.

Having rolled the parchment up, he tucked it beneath an open spot behind the bar, dodging a quizzical glance from Pritchard. With a nod of his head, the man spun on a heel, moving toward the exit, and more importantly... towards that which he was meant to face.

Destiny.
