A Proper Education

A Proper Education

Suede was a doting father and proper family man. He worked hard every day to come home to his loving wife and rambunctious son, who weight on him hand and foot and he settles down in his house clothes with a pipe. And in return for such care, he paid the bills, managed the lawncare, and made certain his son got only the best of learning he could find.

And amongst the many tutors and personal efforts into the education of the boy there would no doubt had there were inevitably some gaps. And what would be the best place to fill such gaps? Why from the school's current mistress, and that would lead Suede to his current location, sitting in the front row of the desks of the school, an apple a book, and a stencil resting on the surface before his clasped hands. No one else had arrived yet as the tailor had made certain to show early, just after dawn, to await the arrival of the teacher.

He had yet to decide if he was there for himself to take the learning back home, or to see if Rhaena could really handle his rather unique son. They should talk, so he waited.

Rhaena was accustomed to arriving in the morning to an empty building. There was a child whose task was to start the fire, of course, so that the building might warm, but once that task had been completed the youth would leave again, coming back later when lessons were to begin. So the gowned woman entered in expectation of an empty room, humming gently to herself as she closed the door behind her. It took her a few moments, in fact, to realize that she was not as alone as she had thought.

"Oh!" She said in surprise. "Oh! ...Ser Roschen. I was not expecting you. ...Can I help you?"

Being in the desk made it a bit awkward for him if he wanted to turn about and look towards Rhaena, so he didn't bother. Instead he acted the proper gentleman and stood from his seat as she entered, offering a small flourish of one hand to accompany a slight bow in her direction. Manners were quite important, especially when dealing with a school mistress who was like as not to beat you if you annoyed her.

Don't get the tailor long, he enjoyed a good beating, but he had business to attend to. "I'm sorry to surprise you and not warn you of my coming. I came because this is a school, and I have a child in need of a bit of supplemental education." He made a motion towards the apple on the desk he'd taken. "I even brought a peace offering."

Manners were important, but Rhaena was scarcely the beating type. The small bow from the once-Councillor recalled the gowned woman to herself and she made her own small courtesy in return. "...A child, yes." Roschen's child, and Jirai's. Even Rhaena's well-practiced manners are not enough to hide the slight tremor at even the thought of a dark elf. "Yes, I suppose your child would be of an age for schooling, ser Roschen, but - pardon me - I rather expected that you might have the means to provide the level of tutoring we can offer here."

"Indubitably, I most certainly can when it comes to the didactic. It is..." He waves a hand vaguely in the air beside him while politely ignoring the loss of poise in the trader woman. "a matter of the practical that I'm seeking help in. He is not the most social child. But can you blame him." Just look at his parents and the pair of socialites they are, and then you can easily see how Suede's son might be what he was.

The tailor let out a helpless shrug. "He needs to learn how to interact with others, how to be a productive member of society." And to see how to best exploit everyone else to his greatest advantage. Experience manipulating other delightful little kids, or at least a place to practice his bullying. "No old tutor can provide that."

Can you blame him? "Hardly." The woman murmured in return. His parents were exactly the problem, of course. She moved past the former Councillor towards her desk. "I can see, ser, that your child could certainly benefit from schooling here," In more ways than one! "And perhaps you understand my concern...?" She certainly doesn't need stabbings or poisonings here! But perhaps she is mistaken and the boy is as lovely and sweet a child as his parents are not.

"Of course. A bit of a bad reputation and all that. I'll give you my word that he'll be on his best behavior and bring nothing inappropriate for this classroom inside these walls." Because of course one of the things he needs to learn is to be resourceful. And having to enter a new place completely unprepared and ill equipped is an excellent way to make that happen. Suede was thinking he'd devised a rather fantastic idea for helping himself and annoying others.

"You'd be welcome to search his things daily if you thought it necessary." Because the boy is a sweet child, but he might sneak candy in or something else nefarious. Chocolate maybe.

"Indeed. Well, if that is the case, ser Roschen, your son would be quite welcome here." So long as there were no incidents, of course. "Should I expect him tomorrow, then?" Rhaena began moving books around on her desk, stacking them neatly. There were only a few minutes left before the other children would start arriving.

Suede would have helped her set the books, and organize things for her day's tasks. Proper etiquette and all, but people tended to assume anything he touched was somehow unsafe. It was a rather insulting thing, really. So for the sake of the lady's peace of mind he simply let her go about the task on her own. "That would be delightful, Miss Olwak. I will see him here bright and early tomorrow, at his best dress and behavior."
