A Gift for a Governor

A Gift for a Governor

It had been some time indeed since the slender female had much involved herself in Myrken Wood, beyond occasional visits to the tavern and random destruction of a few unfortunate tables. A deal had been made though, and so the dark elf found herself on the surface with far more regularity the past few weeks. A deal was a deal, after all.

A deal was a deal, but deals with an insane drow tended to hold... surprises.

It was night. The odd woman, clad in her usual dark red leathers was precariously balanced on a windowsill, tossing objects through with utter carelessness for the sleepers she assumed were inside. Secrecy was clearly not her intent. Boots first, through the window. They were followed by pants and belt and shirt, various other odds and end. Last but not least through the window, a sword. All familiar to the Governor, no doubt, as they belonged to a certain map-making employee.

Closer inspection would reveal a brief note attached to the blade.

I win.

It is a fortunate thing that the Governor and his family had opted to return to the Calomel farm that night, rather than sleep at the Teahouse, instead opting for stout walls and high windows.

When discovered early the next morning, however, the gift, and the manner in which it was delivered, rouses understandable concern - for the security of the Governor and his family, and for the whereabouts of Glenn Burnie himself. It is with trepidation that Cinnabar examines these personal effects for some sign of the mapmaker's fate, for torn cloth or dark stains that might indicate foul play.

Soon after, riders are sent to Darkenhold, to the Rememdium, to the Dagger and other places Glenn is known to frequent, seeking news of when he was last seen. It is clear that this sinister gift has Calomel worried for his friend, and the resources of his office are bent to the task of discovering what exactly has happened.

Glenn Burnie was found, and fairly quickly at that. It was common knowledge at the Broken Dagger that he was currently residing on barmaid Dulcie's couch. It was there, in the early morning that he was found, and past a few visible, but not terrible, bruises upon his head, he seemed healthy and hale, if less than pleased with a number of things. In fact, he had been more than a little upset to hear what had happened. This would not be fun to explain on any level.

Not fun in the slightest, but the manner of the Constable who finally tracks him down indicates that the Governor considers it quite necessary, indeed, one might go as far as to say that he insists. The officer is willing to wait as long as it takes for Glenn to get ready before accompanying him to the Meetinghouse. The mapmaker might be heartened to know that there has been quite a fuss over whether or not he's in peril.

Heartened? Hardly. Embarassed was more like it, especially upon fully grasping what has happened. It made something Glenn had been keeping quiet far more public. In general, he made it a habit to never lie to the Governor. This might have been due to Calomel's general ability to see through such things. It might have been due to a promise to Ariane. He would occasionally choose what facts to present or how to present them, but lying was never a viable option.

However, he was very tempted to lie in this situation, very tempted indeed. No matter. There was no real use in delaying this. Moreover, he just wanted to get his sword back. He felt more naked without that now than when he had waken up without his clothes. Best to get this over with, then.
