Darkenhold: Etain's Task

Darkenhold: Etain's Task

The snow is white as the surf of the sea;
there are star-shaped patches of river-pebble
for stepping stones in a stretch of yard with
shyly budding, winter flowers. Stay far enough
from the Keep's bright wall, and hope to
maintain the sky's sunny favour. Stained
windows throw myriad, coloured lights
over the hedges.

Before going outside, take the one hint
that a painfully cold, bedroom floor can
provide, by dressing in the following:
a coat reinforced with hide, a hat that
rejects ear and face-seeking winds,
the ugly gloves that someone sent for
Midwinter, and the thickest boots ever
conceived. This makes the walk
a little more bearable.

Just when you find yourself drowning
in the endless sea of your work,
the currents of instruction send
your exhausted body shivering into
the cold snowsurf -- washing you
all the way up to the high-framed
entrance to the Stables.

A tall cocoon of coat and hat stands
in the broad, sunlit doorframe: hidden
eyes, a hawk's nose, a straight
mouth. There is a warmth here,
a warmth that is specific to
a stable, a foreign warmth
for Yuriel.

Horses stamp their hooves in contentment,
and he, far more inclined to the
misanthropy of the deep indoors,
spends a few moments silently
absorbing the feeling of this
place.

Etain

Greeted by the smell of animals, of fresh hay which litters the earthen floor, of oiled leather. Greeted by the sound of singing, a lullabye while working, brushing down a horse which towered over.

It is abandoned but for its
horses, and he begins to
turn away. Wait.

[color=Silver]~Bayu .. ~

His suddenly straightened
back throws a long, still
shadow while he listens.

~lyesi ... vyut ..~

A strange and pretty melody
haunts the straw and dirt
floored stable. He disrupts
its serenity with a crunch
of twisting boot. A
purpose-filled stride
carries him past the
stalls with eyes alert
and shrewd.

A long coat like broken
wings brushes the
ground. He moves
deeper, inspecting
the high loft.

The man stops with a
whisper of fabrics,
torn from admiring
the heights by the
noise of a war-horse
and its peculiar
lady.

She has grey eyes; he thinks of storms
and skies and shades of afternoon.
The markings of her face earn a
cool inspection as she calms
the beast that protests an
unscheduled interuption.

She is musical in her own language;
her tongue is rough in the common.
Yuriel wears the smile of a man who
is acute in his awareness of his own
intellect - even though it is clear
that Etain is Queen of this straw-
bed land.

"I need you," he turns his back,
done with his inspection of her
features,
"to follow me. There
is a task."

Nouns, verbs--she is a quick study of these words which mark -things-, which define -actions-. Such is a testament to her own intellect: eschewing books, quills, unable to -read-, but curious to -know- and not be left ignorant of this common tongue the people here share. Granted, proper enunciation is difficult and many words are mispronounced entirely, but there is an ability for communication.

"Need", "follow", "task"--there is understanding here. There is a momentary pause before compliance. Time taken to right the brush yet captured within one hand, send it back to the shelf where it will await her return.

Tempest tossed stare is hard for that turned back, straw-crunching boots leading the way, and she shadows soundlessly.
