The Rememdium Edificium

Postby Rattrap » Mon Mar 24, 2003 1:05 pm

David D'Rael held the board sign up to the wall, trying to level it with the open doorway just off to the side. On the sign were the words All Are Welcome - The Rememdium Edificium , sketched in as nicely as David had the skill to do so. It looked nice, he decided, so he took the iron spike he was holding in the other had and pressed it lightly into the board, just enough to get stuck. Holding it in place, he bent down to scoop up the nearest rock and hammered in the spike with it. There. The sign looked nice.

He tossed the rock aside, brushing his hands off each other. A step back to gain a better view proved the job well done; great. The place was half-running again. The Doc was going to need to clean the place up a little; a door would be nice. Some help, too. Hmm.

David went inside to retrieve a piece of parchment, which he wrote
Help Wanted on before returning outside. The dagger he'd carved the first message on was sitting idly in the dirt nearby, but was soon put to a purpose.

The parchment hangs just next to the sign, impaled to the walls of the Rememdium Edificium by a short, relatively dull little dagger.

The Interior

Postby Rattrap » Mon Mar 24, 2003 6:19 pm

The Rememdium Edificium consists of six rooms and a hallway. Upon entering the building, one is greeted by a relatively large room with three doorways other than the main; one of these three actually had a door.

There was a room just to the left open entering that had several interior windows, or at least holes in the wall where windows ought to be. It was very open; anyone just stepping in could easily see any occupants of the room. It was here that the doctor made his 'office', if you will; any documents concerning the people he treated were kept there. As such, there was much parchment to be found laying about the room.

The first room to the right, the only one with a door, leads to a large room that contains everything Rattrap has to work with. Rags, various sorts of cloth, whatever plants he's gathered, jars full of whatever plants he's already crushed; it was the storeroom.

The second doorway on the right lead to the hallway, which wrapped around the back of the large room in an L shaped fashion; upon entering the hallway, there was an immediate door to the right that was simply another entrance into the storeroom. If one went left and around the bend that also turned to the left, that one would find three doors to the right.

Each of those doors lead to identical rooms that simply had a bed and a stool.

( I wish I could just draw a map, but I'm lacking any program do to so :( )

Midmorning the day after the fight in the
gaol, a cart arrives from Myrken Town and
draws to a halt between tavern and
infirmary. Two stout looking fellows climb
down and remove a wooden door from the rear
of the cart, and within the hour, the infirmary
doorway is covered.
Before leaving, the elder of the two workers
nails a note to their handiwork:
Merci beaucoup.

Lithe fingers rise up, so minutely splayed to curl into the cloth of a dark hued hood, drawing it back to make revelation of an Immortal beauty, kept ever youthful through the ages by the essence of the sylvan which runs through her veins. Locks of sterling spun hair left to dangle upon her shoulders, tendrils parted about the minute point of her elven ears. Tanned flesh drawn close to their bones, violet eyes rest benevolently upon all
that passes before her. Air that lain still about her, long silenced whispers of days gone by and centuries that lay now, only in the weathered texts of ancient books.

The building was walked around three times slowly as the words of the elders spoken in elven tongue. A streak of light seemed to combust about the building then seep within the walls. To some eyes if seen, it would of been an oddity and beauty to behold. To those of the elven, they would know what it meant. To those of darkness, they would curse the elf with shaking fists.

Lips curl into a satisfied smile and a nod made to herself. A hint of silvery tresses seen and white flowing robes that curled around ankles jolsted about, lifted teasingly by the light breeze. She danced under the bright moonlight sky in traditions form to complete the ward upon the building. As quickly as it started, hushed silence and movement was once again. Another silent prayer made in elven and it was completed. A ward casted upon the hospital made to ward off the darkness that has seemingly invaded Myrken Wood. No Darkeness shall pass the door and enter said building unless permission was granted.

The elf proceeded off to her own hovel she knew as home to wait for the dawn of a new day. Her work was only beginning.

Ward Adjustments

Postby Aeri` » Mon Apr 07, 2003 12:44 pm

Upon the request of the good doctor, the elf redid the ward upon the hospital. Same chants down but arranged so the wards worked on the storeroom, hallway and windows only.

The Rememdium Edificium

Postby Rattrap » Wed Jun 18, 2003 7:56 am

The Rememdium Edificium is a low, squarish single-story building just across the road from the Broken Dagger. Not directly, but one can view the entrance to one building from the other, and vice versa. It's no farther away than about a hundred feet; such distances go fast, considering that's about a third of a football field.

The Edificium is sunken back from the road enough to permit a half-decent yard; there is grass to be seen, at least, with a barren dirt pathway extending off the road although most in haste simply trample the grass. It's not dangerous or anything. There is a tree in this yard, half obscuring the Broken Dagger's far side from the entrance of the Edificium. Other windows will find different views blocked at different angles respectively.

The tree in question is a large, old oak. Large enough to overshadow the Edificium quite easily; it keeps the building especially cool in the afternoon, shading a good portion of the building.

The roof of the Rememdium Edificium is a simple pyramid shape, low and sharp in its angles. There was not much height in the center point, but it did its job - preventing water build-up and the subsequent problems that such a condition causes.

The door to the Edificium is centered in the main entrance room, which means it's off-center from the outside, as there is another room that shares the front of the building. Three windows also occupy that face - two in the entrance, or foyer, and another in that other room - the storeroom.

The foyer is a large, relatively plain room. Wooden chairs dot the wall shared by the entrance, as well as a few - in fact, two - landscape paintings that were an attempt to put some feeling of serenity into the room. They were fairly large paintings, but perhaps misplaced in such a large room. A wash basin occupies the wall opposite the door.

In the far left corner of the room from the door, there is a room. It's a square room with no door, but a doorway facing not at the original entrance, but facing right - the walls are also cut away as if to place in windows looking into the foyer, but no windows were ever installed. It was finished that way, providing no barriers for the doctor to pass through if severely injured folk came in, as this room was indeed the doctor's office. Probably the most decorated room: a large desk sits in the center of the room, with a chair on either side of it. The one opposite the doorway, obviously the doctor's, did not match the others - it looked far older, more worn. A bookshelf rests against the wall on the door's right, filled with large volumes of whathaveyou in, for the most part, Common - but a few are written in Elvin dialects.

Finally, two painted portraits are nailed to the wall, someplace out of the way - one shows a naturally beautiful Elvin woman, the other portraying an angelic blonde woman.

The room sharing the front wall with the foyer is also squarish, like the doctor's office, however considerably bigger. There are actual doors to this room, one joining the foyer and another joining with the hallway that runs along the outer right side of the building; the foyer also has a doorway to this hallway, several yards left of the one leading to the storeroom. This one has no door.

The storeroom is, naturally, just that - a room for storage. Shelves line two of the walls, covered in vials empty and full, with varying colors. A table rests against another wall, usually covered in plant and herb crushings. An accompanying chair is tucked under it when not in use.

Spare cots and chests containing spare clothing are in the final corner. Tools like bandages and dagger shavings have their own shelf dedication, at a level that is easily reached.

The hallway, wrapping about the outer right side of the building, turns down to stretch around the backside of the foyer. From this stretch come three doors, which subsequently lead to three uniform rooms. Each room contains two raised cots, a couple of stools, and table containing similar emergency supplies as the storeroom. A window is on each available outer wall, meaning two for the rooms at the far left and far right, and only one for the center. Blinds are available for all of them.

Each room of the Edificium has a hole leading to a duct, all of which lead to stove built into the back wall of the building on the outside; a large stack of firewood is almost always piled nearby in case of specifically cold days. All one has to do is start it burning, add in fire wood and close it, and the heat would channel through the rest of the building - most of all to the three rooms, as they have more proximity than any other part of the building.

Excluding the main entrance, the doorways and windows of the Rememdium Edificium have been magically warded against forceful or demonic entries; one could not conceivably leave go further than the foyer or enter through any windows without use of magics stronger than those used for the ward, or an invitation - which is generally the case.

Most coming to visit friends are pointed to them by the doctor or one of his assistants, which is, more or less an invitation - most don't even realize the wards are there.

An Additional Matter...

Postby Rattrap » Wed Aug 06, 2003 4:14 am

It was brought to my attention that some of the patients might need food. Which, I s'ppose, is a good point. I mean, they can go three weeks without it, right? :p

So, in lacking a kitchen, I've devised a setup that would enable the Rememdium Edificium's patients food while not conjuring up another room - perhaps in the near future such a room could be built, but it would be more fun to be played out, asking a grant of the council, etc., etc. - it would be the first issue I can think of where the council was actually doing council-like activities (rather than military or policing likes).

So...everyone regularly using the Edificium could simply adjust themselves to the idea that David has a 'contract' of sort - at least, an arrangement - with the local butchershop and bakery, and they he physically goes to get the food at the three normal meal times, I'd be grateful. He's gotta do something while he's idling all day...

Kobold KaBOOM!

Postby Tyralor » Mon Aug 18, 2003 3:02 pm

<Aeri`> The elf again can be found in David's office attempting to catch up with paperwork. Lenore was watched over most of the night with clerics taking shifts and she herself just checked in on her to give a newly joined cleric a break. The quill in hand moved along the parchments and another one completed was added to the done pile.

<Nameless>" Hop! Hop!" The creture that was coming in through the door was one of the more peculiar ones Aeri had no doubt set her eyes upon. Vaguely lizardlike, with scales and a hint of a tail dangling behind it. Yellow eyes with red scales. It had managed to get itself closed at the very least, though was definitely suffering from something of a hunchedback. "Hop. Fssssspphhhh. " It seemed to be enjoynig itself, whatever. Cloak overtop most of its form, and tattered shorts for the rest. "Hop!" It declared, doing just that. Hopping. Knees bending and hopping forward till it was in the middle of the room. "Hop. Fffssshhhh. Helllooooo?"

<Aeri`> The elf peered around the corner and noted the creature. Well this was odd. She stood up with quill and tablet in hand as another cleric went to great the creature at the door.

<Nameless> "Hop! " It stated again, and shifted a bit to look up at Aeri when she came closer. "Ankles hurt." The thing...the kobold complained. "Hop." It angled over a bit, moving to take a
seat on one of the chairs nearby, no doubt so that Aeri could take a look at them. "Fsssshhhhh. Hop! Waz ur name?"

<Aeri`> The new cleric gave the creature an odd look since he had no clue what it was. Seemed his training never allowed him to view any but perhaps elven and humans. Aeri however moved to the creature and glanced at his ankles then to him. The quill moved to write upon the tablet. "I am Aerithya. What seems to be the matter with your ankles..sir?" She had hoped she got the sir right. One can never tell with creatures. The new cleric was nodded to.

<Nameless> "Ankles hurt." It moaned once again, having managed to sit down at least, though it struggled to do that. Waggling feet in the air for a few moments. "Aeri? I Krok!" It grinned brilliantly for a few moments. It -looked- like the ankles were a little bruised. Though it was anyone's guess as to how that happened. "Hop. Ffssssshhhhh. Hop." It stated, with a grin at the elf.

<Aeri`> A note was given to the new cleric and the elf watched him rush off to the storage room to fetch the needed items to help the poor creature. A soft smile given to Krok. She again wrote upon the tablet. "We shall see if we can ease your pain then. Have you a staff or cane to walk with perhaps?"

<Nameless> "Ffssshhhh. No. going to hurt more soon Krok think. Hop. Fsssshhhh." It wiggled its toes for a few seconds. Staring at them with a bit of wide eyed curiousity on that particular account. "You fix Krok's ankles?"

<Aeri`> A quick nod made and a grateful look given to the new cleric once he came back with the healing sauve and bandages she had asked for. Again the tablet writen upon. "I will place some healing sauve upon your ankles then bandage them for support." She again wrote a note for the new cleric to fetch a long wooden staff to give to Krok. She had ordered such a week ago from a carpenter who had extra time and wood to make such. Goodness knows they needed them with the recent attacks around. Most had arm or feet injuries.

<Nameless> "Ffssshhh. Krok suppose to say something to Aeri. Fsssh. Hop!" It announced cheerfully after a couple of moments, watching with fascination as Aeri applied the salve. The kobold made this a bit tricky for her. "Ooo. Cold!" Which caused it to twitch just a bit. It seemed to be having a bit of difficult to bandage and such. One hand reaching out for support of Aeri's shoulder. "Fsssshhh. Suppose to say You Be Quiet! Or dometin. Fssh. Hop!"

<Aeri`> A blink made upon his touch and she gave him a curious look. She handed the bandage to the new cleric to help bind the ankles for support and she then wrote upon the tablet. "Be quiet? Sir I can not talk as it is. What do you mean, be quiet?"

<Nameless> "Fsssh. Dunno. Fssh. Hey. That funny. Fsssh stop." He blinked faintly, looking at her almost curiously for a few seconds. Head tilting to the side as he studied her and his ankles in an almost curious manner.

<Aeri`> Well this was odd. She was told to be quiet, but by whom? Again the tablet writen upon. "Just leave the bandage on for today then you can remove. It will help the sauve heal your sore ankles, alright? And who told you to tell me to be quiet?"

<Nameless> He opened his mouth to speak once again. Nothing ever actually came out though. The Fssshhh had stopped. That had been the fuse, actually. The hunch of the hunchback kobold hadn't been a natural one, but a small barrel of a dark grainish substance that dwarves and goblins used in their mining techniques. A very explosive powder truly. Minor amounts were dangerous. He had a small barrel attached to him. Krok had been wrong earlier. The explosion was more than powerful enough to reduced Krok to pieces before there was even a hint of pain registering in the little brain.

The resulting explosion had been felt through the tavern up the street, and had definitely devestated the front entrance of the Edificium. The only fortunate part of the entire affair, was that typically the mining explosive was used in more confined spaces. Thus the entire edificium likely, had not been destroyed. Aeri of course had suffered a great deal from the ensuing blast. Fortune spared her.

Fortune spare the man who had to collect the pieces of the new cleric or the Kobold. There were more than a few of those to go around.

Doctor David D'Rael blinked once, when he saw a rather severe lack of Edificium. Twice so, when he looked around to verify that the building in question was indeed, the Rememdium Edificium. The next thought in the registry was the simple fact that there was supposed to be somebody actively there at all times. Which meant...

The handful of roots were tossed into the street as the doc ran for the rubble of the building, immediately searching for personnel.

"Aeri! Freya! Jirai!" Anybody. He wasn't sure who was there at the time.

The doc had time to survey the damage while he was digging through the rubble for one of his own; his office had been half-obliterated, but that wasn't any more of a mess than he left there usually. The store room was...actually, surprisingly intact, except the rubble and the lack of a wall on that side entirely. All the remaining vials and potions were covered in dust, making them all gray. Some of the wall cutting between the foyer and the patient rooms beyond had been blasted, but the rooms themselves seemed unaffected. One plus...

David could feel the pull on his spine every time he lifted the heavier pieces of wall and roof away, but that didn't stop him. The gloom made it ever worse to search, but hopefully anybody under would make a noise, a groan, or even just breathe loudly. The elven infravision, unfortunately, passed him up like virtually every other elven trait that most half-elves possessed.

He stepped into something squishy. That was an unpleasant omen. Still hope! That could be...anybody. How grave a thought to think.

The doc would dig, through and through, until he found all three of his personnel under the rubble or quite all right standing around -- it didn't matter. He simply wouldn't stop until he was sure.

Itanya looked up blearily from her spot in the doorway. She had taken root at the entrance to the room where Aeri and Suede had been stashed away for the night just in case some other fool tried to blow something else up.

The Edificium's facade was gone, but the back half of the structure had survived. The clerics in residence had not wanted the elven healer to be moved, so Itanya had just settled in.

There was someone prowling out there, calling for people. With one glance at the sleeping tailor and his wife, the swordswoman got to her feet and made her way towards the doctor. She vaguely remembered him, enough not to threaten him right away.

"Aeri's back here. She's been hurt." Itanya looked around and dragged one hand through her short brown hair. Even with the gloom left by the canopy of spiders overhead, Itanya could make out the detail of the destruction. "They told me that one cleric was killed" The woman paused for a moment.

"Don't know anything beyond that." She shrugged and turned away. Let the Doctor make of that what he would.

No sooner did the elf turn and move towards David's office just around the corner.... the explosion had gone off sending the elf flying and landing upon her arm. With the odd angle it was bent, ones could clearly see it was broke. The elf had no time to react for it had come unexpected but in her unconscious mind she heard the words spoken by the Kobold over and over again. "Keep Quiet." What did it mean? The rubble falling from above her is what struck her head and caused the darkness to take over. Dark crimson blood seeped from her forehead from the wound. Badly bruised and trapped was she untill Diesel found her under the rubble and pulled her out. The elf would not come out of her dark world for a few days, but once she woke..questions would be asked. More death was caused because of her.

Another Morning

Postby Itanya_Blade » Wed Aug 20, 2003 5:29 am

Sleeping in a doorway for two nights proved to Itanya that she was getting soft. Her back ached which did little for her disposition. Still, the clerics that remained in the Edificium paid little attention to her grumbling. Healers and physicians everywhere, it seemed, were aware that in their case she was more bark than bite. Not for the first time, she wondered if those that made healing their profession shared some sort of shadowy communication.

It was morning, her body told her that as she stretched muscles stiff from her choice of sleeping arrangements. You could not tell it from the sky, since the canopy of spiders still held the sun at bay. The constant darkness did not trouble her as much as it might some. She had lived by the flickering of torches for days before. Besides, she could always leave.

The swordswoman pondered a great many things as she stretched her legs. Not the least of which was her meeting last eve with the creature that had orchestrated the living curtain high above her head. Audmathus. Thinking about him brought back the memories of the feelings she had experienced in his presence and a reminder that she was not as she was.

There had been a time, not so long ago by her reckoning when she would have drawn a weapon on the creature and done battle with it without regards for the consequences. “Once upon a time…” Instead, she had watched letting Diesel make a token defense for the both of them. Experience had taught her caution, but not wisdom. There was a part of her that wanted to try her strength against Audmathus. The thrill of battle called to her. She fought that, these days, hoarding her strength against a coming premonition of disaster.

Instead of fighting, she had played both messenger and hostage. The whole idea both amused and disgusted her. She hated being thought of as weak, and yet that faulty perception could be used to her advantage. Her inner conflict was not as important as the vials she had delivered safely into the hands of the Edificium’s doctor. Audmathus claimed they were the antidote to the poison that plagued Quincy and some paladin.

In truth, Itanya cared little if Quincy succumbed to what plagued her. The only small smattering of sympathy she felt for the woman was far outweighed by the trouble her very existence had caused Aeri. And the paladin? As a rule, Itanya felt little love for any paladin. In her experience, they tended to strike first and ask questions later.

Overall, it had been an enlightening evening. She just wondered how well Diesel had fulfilled is part of Aumathus’ request. She did not fear for her life. No matter what that creature was, she doubted its ability to kill her. She just thought that Diesel had gotten the short end of the stick.

The Edificium Disbands

Postby Rattrap » Thu Sep 04, 2003 1:47 pm

Doctor David D'Rael sighed in the chair in the storeroom, the one in his office long since destroyed; perhaps his desk might still be usable, in some means or another, but it was probably done for. The sigh came from the unwanted obligation he was about to undertake; but an obligation it was, to his patients, and even to those who would be the first and foremost, if not the only, to protest to his decisions underway. Notes, letters, were written, to each of his respective employees...

To those working at the Edificium...

At present time, I have to ask you all to take a break from your duties here. As of late, there has been too much turmoil, too much chaos, and it endangers the lives of those who come here for healing.

In other words, I request that you find alternative employment until I can bring order back. I apologize for the obvious suddenness and stress this might place on you, but it can be no more than the issues most of you are already dealing with.

To Aeri -
Your service with me is most appreciated and valued; don't ever think otherwise. But, for the time present, you have dangerous matters that you need to clear up before you return to your duties -- there will always be a spot for you here.

To Jirai -
To be frank, I'm still in doubt as to your employment here. We need to speak on this matter, quite in depth, but for now, I'd simply be grateful for the chance to rectify matters.

To the clerics -
I never hired any of you anyway. I'm not sure what you're doing around the Edificium, but I'm afraid I must ask your vacancy. Dark times are on us, more than ever, and in this I find trust to play a crucial part in what I do, and I can have none with individuals I do not know. Speak to me if you would like to remedy the situation.

- Doctor David D'Rael

Notes, to everyone David knew to be working at the Rememdium Edificium, with the exception of Freya -- simply, he hadn't seen her for some time, and he didn't know where to leave or send a letter that would reach her in any reasonable stretch of time, anyway.

Now, to simply wait for the Governor's follow-up...

The news was rather a shock to the elf. She was without a job now and there was nowhere to go. A look of sadness given and the note dropped to the floor.

There was only one way she could think of to stop the madness. There was alot to think on now. With heavy heart, the elf would set forth to make things right again.

As for the letter intended for the dark elf, well. It would probably have a bit of difficulty reaching her, as Jirai had currently managed to get herself locked up in Gaol.

But the drowess was released, lucky for her, in the morning, before Kilborn figured out exactly -what- she had been carrying. With nine lash marks across her back and a bruised head to show for her stay in gaol, the dark elf read the letter. And just laughed.

Apparently the lock up had not been too good for her tentative grasp on sanity.
