New word arrives for the Councilors.

New word arrives for the Councilors.

Postby Guillaume » Tue Sep 06, 2005 3:55 am

I, Giscard Guillaume, Lord of Lothbury Estate, Councilor of the Myrken Wood Judiciary In Regards To Commerce and Trade Etc., to His Honour Altias Bromn, Governor of Myrken Wood; to His Honour Suede Roschen, the Councilor of Agriculture; to His Honour Kerrak al'Nerun, the Councilor of Defence and Civil Security; to His Honour Aloisius Treadwell, the Councilor of Administrative Sanctions; to Thomas Daniels, Captain of the Myrken Wood Guard, Order of Straka; to Joshua Kilborn, Lieutenant of the Myrken Wood Guard, Order of Straka; to 'Cy' Proxemus, Representative of the Myrken Militia: Greetings.

As a foreword, commendations are in order for the good men of the Order of Straka, and also those who graciously give their time over to the Myrken Militia: without their recent efforts, Myrken Wood surely would not known the spate of restfulness and peace which we have recently enjoyed. To those gentlemen -- and to yourselves, Governor and Councilors -- the people of Myrken are surely in debt. However, it is not congratulations alone which prompt me to pen this missive today: nay, not congratulations, but hope. For there is surely not a man amongst us who has not said -- of only to himself -- that this surely cannot be a lasting peace, and yet I am privy to news which suggests that it can be made to be so.

I am informed by one Darius McClellan -- a recent visitor to my home Estate -- that the 'curse' often ascribed in jest to Myrken land is in fact quite genuine. Furthermore, McClellan claims to have identified its source: an un-named Evil sealed within Myrken Wood by means of the 'Demonstone', which device was at some point removed to distant Shadow Moon Isle. However, this Demonstone allegedly functions as an arcane beacon, drawing creatures of malice and ill-will to the place of its original creation: namely, our own dear Myrken.

The names mentioned at this point in our conversation were 'Baie' and 'Audmathus'.

In any case, this McClellan proposes an expedition to the Isle, to be led and staffed by Myrken volunteers, for he lacks the expertise for such an endeavour. He does, however, wish to accompany these men and women upon their journey, and offers his ship for their use; named Little Zephyr, it is moored at present in the northern bay.

Gentlemen, I repeat this proposal to you in the very manner to which it was originally offered to my ears, without comment upon its merits, if indeed it has any whatsoever. McClellan has taken up residence at the Broken Dagger inn -- an unfortunate coincidence, but not an unexpected one -- where questions may be directed towards him. In the meantime, I ask only your opinions on this matter.

Done by my hand at the Estates of Lothbury, this 6th day of September.
Giscard Guillaume.

One of the notes sent out would go unanswered, just as many others of many sorts sent to Aloisius Treadwell this past month. Raylan, his wife, would have taken it upon herself to try to handle what she could of the business affairs--particularly any payments that might have needed making or taking up from individuals--but her husband has long since been absent, supposedly off in Westenford in Amasynia. Where *is* the Councilor, precisely?

Of course, this is an excellent idea, this ridding Myrken of evils and such. If only Tready were here to agree to it!

The response from Lieutenant Joshua Kilborn's office would be through the hands of Kilborn's aide and adjunct, Key Lannew. A short missive stating quite simply that Kilborn has travelled to Westenford to pursue an investigation into the disappearance of the Councillor of Administrative Sanctions.

Addressed to each councilor in turn, Thomas gave more good news:

I have met with this Darius McClellan and spoke with him for some time; though I sense that saving Myrken is somewhat less of a priority to him as a guard escort to treasure hunt the island, it appears his story is nonetheless true. He found a book in our Library of Mudd that verifies his story - and I've also taken it to the librarian to verify its authenticity.

It's as real a piece of history as anything else.

As well as documenting ancient history, the book also tells of how and where this demonstone can be destroyed. There's more to the story, of course, but it's lengthy - the book will tell it better than I can, at any rate.

We should meet on this as soon as possible; the faster we move, the faster I believe we can make the peace we have last, preferribly before the next disaster or the next plague strikes.

Captain Thomas Daniels hadn't heard from any of the councilors concerning his findings, and that...well, concerned him. What was more, he'd only heard from or of Giscard Guillaume in some time; no word from the Governor, from Kerrak, from Suede...worse still, the Captain was privvy to the absence of Aloisius Treadwell, and his own leiutenant off searching for him.

And their short-lived peace had already ceased, of course. In short, the situation did not look well in the eyes of the captain. But for once, there was a glimmer of hope in the fantastic - but perhaps not unbelievable - story and opportunity brought to Myrken's door by the one Darius McClellan.

So, Daniels would act. He didn't bother penning the council; for all he knew, they were all dead. It wouldn't surprise him all that much if they were. No; if they came or sent to his office, he made sure they would get a reply telling them of the situation.

Darius told him the expedition would only take a couple of days; half a day to get out, with the right winds, half a day to return, and maybe a day to find what they were looking for. The captain would find some volunteers and go with them; under normal circumstances, he'd just as well bring a squad of guardsmen, but Thomas knew every man and woman would be needed defending Myrken Wood at the moment.

...something else was coming. But like everything else before it, it will underestimate the resolve of the land and be vanquished.

Or so Captain Thomas Daniels hoped.

In the meantime, he arranged for patrols to be actively searching through the forest and outlying areas for any signs of malignant activity.

The room was dark with curtains pulled tightly to dissuade the glow of sunlight. Within, dust rode strong on the various surfaces. Most particularly the oaken table that sat in the middle of the office. Piles of papers, most of them directives or suggestions, left unfinished and unsigned. An ink well left to dry in the intervening months of neglect. An old cloak lay draped over the chair, as if waiting for it's owner to return and put it back on. It was stiff, having been damp all those days ago and left to dry.

There was a slot in the door, which had been locked all this time, for parcels and post to be shoved through. And there were a number of things waiting there for the Councilor to return and peruse through them. And it was about time for that to happen, too. Almost a week since the first missive was sent to this office, and the door would sweep open slowly. Motes of dust were caught by the glow of sunlight in the hallway. They swirled in the wash of air caused by the opening door. Heavy boots thudded into the dusty floor, then the light was cut off by the shutting of the door.

More dust to be kicked up by the motion through the room. A bending to pluck up the more recent bits of mail. Gloved fingers would peruse each, glancing at the headers before tossing a few to the side. A letter from home, from Soria. That one was pocketed quickly. One from Marshall Dross. Three from his mother. Ah. And one from Councilor Giscard. The others were tossed upon the table, which caused him to cough annoyedly. Then it was opened, lips compressing at the words written within.

Well. It seemed it was a good time to return, wasn't it. And time to let the township and provence know it.

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters... But with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you chose. But get drunk. - Charles Baudelaire

Indecision

Postby Rattrap » Sun Oct 09, 2005 5:25 am

Darius McClellan knocked on the door to Captain Thomas Daniels' office, cracking open the door a bit to peek in after hearing the familiar voice calling for him to do so. Spotting the one-armed captain watching him, Darius entered the office proper and got straight to the point.

"Captain, I'm curious as to whether you're actually trying to set things in motion. I haven't heard anything from you in a while."

The captain watched him intently, taking a pause to decide on his words: "Mr. McClellan, you are correct in your curiosity. I've put the matter on hold for the time being; Myrken Wood is currently in a stranger political situation than a dangerous one. So. Rest assured, I will contact you when we've decided to act on your information."

And with that, Darius was dismissed; he left without apparent disappointment or annoyance, though the captain suspected those were present anyhow. Thomas turned back to his never-ending paperwork. Suede's skeptism had done some good, perhaps; the captain was made aware of how dangerous it was to have so many officials vacant. Perhaps more so than this 'demonstone' Darius had told them of.
