For the first time, Dorian earns a wage for indulging her fascinations with the wonders of baking, of roasting, of the sheer magic of turning flour and water into a taste dessert. Of course, giving the lackwit access to the kitchens has had some drawbacks. Soon after the Flux, for instance, the tavern's infestation of rats was traced back to her determination to have some of the little vermin for pets. A small, fierce war was waged between she and Proxenus, the one-eyed chef who was determined to eradicate the pests; on more than one occasion, she held solemn funerals for her slaughtered pets. Only appeasement was able to end the conflict, Proxenus eventually presenting her with a cat of docile and patient nature. The beast, as yet unnamed, has had a home in the tavern cellars ever since. So too has Dorian -- although her real home is some miles away, in the cavernous dwelling of her beloved teacher, Bizen Rei. Still, the girl has become a regular feature of the tavern, where she may often be found working as a haphazard sushiya, singing merry rhymes to the lobsters that are slated for the evening's dinner, or asking the more boisterous patrons to please, please, oh won't you please stop hitting each other? |
