The topography of New Dauntless is as diverse as can be expected from a land area this large. This land consists of 895 square miles of mostly barren territory. Northern New Dauntless serves as room for discovery, while the southeast portion is alive with activity.

The western and central mountains rise to elevations over 3,000 feet. One area, called Spinster's Range, extends into the northern portion of New Dauntless; its borders have rugged terrain. The northern top consists mainly of rocky peninsulas and fjords. This region is very sparsely populated with a few neglected roads to what explorers have so far considered a wasteland (probably for its unfortunate weather and difficult sailing waters).

The topography of eastern New Dauntless (east of the Silver Forest) consists of mostly level or gently rolling terrain typical of coastal lowlands. Elevations rise gradually from less than twenty feet above sea level near the coast to a few isolated high points at elevation 240. Beaches, wetlands, various freshwater brooks and ponds, woodlands, and large tracts of farm land can all be found within the confines of its boundaries.

New Dauntless (formerly Novaya Neustrashimy), officially the Suzerain Kingdom of New Dauntless, is a coastal region in the north of the Amasynian Peninsula. It is bordered to the south by Thessilane, Derry and Myrken Wood, and to the south-west by Amasynia.

Origins
The founding of New Dauntless dates to 1163 AI with the arrival of Prince Kazimir of Neustrashimy at the head of a fleet of colony ships from across the Beradt Sea; barely half of the fleet completed the voyage, most being lost to pestilence and poor weather; the survivors found themselves on unknown and as-yet uninhabited shores, and soon established themselves in the region's eastern lowlands despite harsh winters and difficult harvests. Kazimir's heirs prospered, after a fashion, as the land was brought under the axe and plough and the colonists settled into life in a new land.

New Dauntless is considered the 'tip' of the Amasynian Province. It is the least inhabited community of the province, mainly due to agricultural difficulties. Situated coastal plains flank the forestry, rising gradually from east to west where the landforms finally give way to grand hills shaped by ledge. This coastal plain is drained by many streams and rivers.

In the spring of 1233 A.I., a fleet of warships from Regal Province landed on New Dauntless coast, disgorging soldiers and cavalrymen belonging to House Taliaferro of southern Trae Kelsa; following a brief military campaign pitting trained and well-equipped soldiers against the hastily-conscripted peasant-army of the Kazimid throne, the old ruling class of New Dauntless was efficiently removed and replaced by Taliaferro nobles.

In 1270 A.I. the Eighth War of Salvation brought the recently-established Taliaferro Dynasty into conflict with the Kingdom of Amasynia as it sought to expand its holdings over the Amasynian Peninsula. Remarkable for its extensive use of naval warfare (including the decisive Battle of Hexal), the conflict was brought to a close when Amasynia landed a force of three thousand men on the coast and marched upon Edirne while the main body of the New Dauntless army was fending off an invasion force from the border with Thessilane. The King surrendered following the capture of his capital, and was required to abdicate in favour of his son, who was believed to be more sympathetic to the goal of a united Amasynia.

January temperatures in southern New Dauntless are typically in the area of 22.4 degrees and can warm in July to 71.9 degrees. New Dauntless' populated south sees up to 36 inches of rain per year as well as moderate snowfall averaging 68 inches. Tides along the southeast coast have two highs and two lows a day and vary by approximately 8.5 ft. The tidal range increases with the new and full moon phases to create spring tides that are 5% to 10% larger than the mean range.

The southern region, which is included in the Beradt coastline, offers its waters to the marine industry. This region is the closest to the centers of population and offers trade with other areas of the province, including Myrken Wood, Heath, and Xanth Grange.

Towns and cities are managed by a sheriff, who is often personally appointed by the prince of the region and thus carries considerable influence in local matters. There is little trouble in New Dauntless, as the nation is surprisingly united; theft is often a trouble in times of shortage, but far less than might be expected.

There are twin rivers, the Canobie and the Hummarock, flowing north to southeast and following into Thessilane.

Military
 +
New Dauntless has long and proud military tradition dating back to the days of the Amasynian Kingdom and beyond. Despite its relatively sparse population New Dauntless maintains a large standing army, predominantly recruited from the north of the region, in particular the rugged and isolated lands of Northern New Dauntless. The cost of maintaining this strong military is often defrayed by allowing regiments to hire out as mercenary companies, on the conditions that they take no contracts against the interests of the governments of either New Dauntless or Trae Kelsa, and that they return to New Dauntless when required. This results in the New Dauntless military containing a sizeable proportion of experienced and veteran troops, even at times when New Dauntless itself is at peace.

North Passage Down gets its start in New Dauntless and follows through the land of Myrken Wood, passing the abominable swampland of Ghreu Fenn. The safe road can now be accessed from New Dauntless, in addition to Gilroy Pass, as Thessilane militia forces have long-since departed. Throughways, Barak's Passage and the Truedrift, which once offered travel between Thessilane and New Dauntless, remain in a state of some disrepair, following the cessation of hostilities between the two provinces.
+
The current head of the New Dauntless army is Prince Rayin Taliaferro, son of King Kyliss. The chain of command is straightforward, consisting of regiments of between 600-1000 men, each led by a Hauptman (captain). The preferred weapon for the infantry is the pike, although veteran soldiers prefer more specialised weapons such as the two-handed sword, halberd or billhook. It is also not uncommon for New Dauntless regiments to compensate for losses by recruiting from foreign lands or among the ranks of defeated foes. Many prefer to join their former enemy than be executed on the spot, since only officers and members of the nobility are taken as prisoners to be ransomed.

New Dauntless has long been famous and proud for its military prowess, which dates back to the days when it was merely part of an empire. Despite a sparse population, New Dauntless keeps a fairly large standing army at all times, often allowing regiments to hire out under other contracts, under the conditions that 1) They do not take contracts directly against the Tetrarch and 2) They return to New Dauntless when called. Thus, large sums of veteran units are always within the military.

Gently rolling terrain stretches from the shore of the Beradt Sea in the east, though the northern coast becomes considerably more rugged and uneven, broken up by cliffs and steep-sided fjords which make landing a boat difficult in the extreme. The Afanasiy River forms the southern border with Thessilane, and the Sikasoon Mountains separate New Dauntless from Derry. The central region is dominated by the Belogorskoi Plateau, an arid area remarkable for the massive petrified trees of the Silver Forest, whose trunks tower scores of feet into the air, creating an eerily beautiful landscape of silent and leafless trunks. Further west the landscape drops again until it sinks into the foetid swamplands of Ghreu Fenn, which forms the region's southwest border with Myrken Wood. To the west the broad estuary of the Posehabnak River divides New Dauntless from Amasynia, and the natural barrier of the Spinster Mountains stretches towards Northern New Dauntless.

The current head of the New Dauntless forces is Prince Luther Corsaith. The chain of command is simple and straightforward, ending in regiments of close to 600 - 1000 men, in general, each led by a Hauptman (captain). The primary weapon for their soldiers is the pike, a 12 - 18 foot spear, as well as several specialty weapons for more veteran soldiers (two-handed sword, halberd, billhook). It is also not uncommon for New Dauntless regiments to recruit from foreign lands and enemy survivors to compensate for losses. Many prefer to join their former enemy than be killed on the spot (the only prisoners taken are important, title bearing ones).

The literal foundation of New Dauntless is its bedrock. In most places, the bedrock is concealed by a thin veneer of soil and vegetation. The depth to bedrock is generally only a few tens of feet and rarely over a hundred.
+

+
Some of the most beautiful scenery is where the rugged bedrock is exposed to view, creating the Silver Forest where petrified trees provide habitat for other natural wonders who prefer the bare forest floor. In fact, the general distribution and shape of these lowland terrains is controlled by the way different kinds of bedrock have been eroded differently through geologic time.
+

+
The eastern coast hosts an abrupt change in elevation. This provides numerous lakes and ponds as well as rivers and streams. The topography of these lowlands lends itself very well to the many species of fish found in the cold, clear waters and the abundance of wildlife that ventures from the remote silver forests.

New Dauntless' agriculture mainly consists of seafood, poultry, eggs, and cattle.

Water plays an important role, from rugged shorelines to the inland streams, rivers, and lakes. Bedrock wells supply drinking water - an unseen resource of great importance to the people.

New Dauntless inhabitants obtain their water from wells. There is a significant source for municipal and industrial water supplies. Ground water provides direct and indirect work opportunities for well drillers.

Because of human reliance on it, ground water is one of the most precious natural resources. No fuels or coal have been found or produced here, not surprisingly for such a terrain dominated by old, metamorphic rocks.

History

The Expeditionary Armada

In the spring of 1233 A.I., a fleet of warships from Regal Province landed on New Dauntless coast, disgorging soldiers and cavalrymen belonging to House Taliaferro of southern Trae Kelsa; following a brief military campaign pitting trained and well-equipped soldiers against the hastily-conscripted peasant-army of the Kazimid throne, the old ruling class of New Dauntless was efficiently removed and replaced by Taliaferro nobles.

The Amasynian Period

In 1270 A.I. the Eighth War of Salvation brought the recently-established Taliaferro Dynasty into conflict with the Kingdom of Amasynia as it sought to expand its holdings over the Amasynian Peninsula. Remarkable for its extensive use of naval warfare (including the decisive Battle of Hexal), the conflict was brought to a close when Amasynia landed a force of three thousand men on the coast and marched upon Edirne while the main body of the New Dauntless army was fending off an invasion force from the border with Thessilane. Towns and cities are managed by a sheriff, who is often personally appointed by the prince of the region and thus carries considerable influence in local matters. A sheriff is permitted to appoint deputies as needed. There is little trouble in New Dauntless, as the nation is surprisingly united; theft is often a trouble in times of shortage, but far less than might be expected.

Military

The Afanasiy River forms the southern border with Thessilane, and the Sikasoon Mountains separate New Dauntless from Derry.

Cities

The capital city of Edirne lies in a defensive location protected by a coil of the Ippolit River, and has been home to the Kazamid kings and to the Taliaferro dynasty which supplanted them.

Travel

The Dauntine Road forms one of the few safe paths through the swampland of Ghreu Fenn to the southwest, meeting the North Passage Down to connect the capital of Edirne to Myrken Wood, and from there allows travel to Amasynia, Heath and Xanth Grange. The Truedrift serves as a road across the Sikasoon Mountains into Derry, while several bridges span the Afanasiy River into Thessilane. The coast of the Beradt Sea also boasts a number of ports in the southeast, most prominent of which lies at the mouth of the Ippolit and carries river traffic to and from the capital.
