Description
Roderic Cliché is a short, quiet, plump, elderly man. Gray and balding, with an enormously fluffy mustache, Roderic usually dresses in gold-rimmed eyeglasses, much simpler robes, and soft sandals, walking about with a cane and a slight stoop. He is usually cautious around others, particularly whenever in a public inn or around adventurers.
This image, however, is a front; the lovable, cautious toymaker is a shape-shifted body used to hide the presence of an aged, corpulent, two-headed dragon named Bracchus. Rather than deal with the infirmities of being a dragon of advanced age and rather than deal with the assaults on his person and hoard that would come with such, the great wyrm chose to hide himself from smaller eyes, a deception he has maintained well throughout the years.
Background
Origins
Being an ancient dragon in disguise, Roderic has lived much longer than he ever readily admits. Seeming to be perpetually just shy of old age and claiming to be "Somewhere around sixty years, I think?", Mr. Cliché's first known appearance dates back to the second of the twelfth month, in A.R. 100, when the old man was found lying unconscious and naked except for his eyeglasses in a dragon's cave a mile from the small hamlet of Delamar. Originally claiming to be largely forgetful of much of his history before he woke in the back bedroom of the town's church, he soon proved himself both the richest man present--arguing successfully that his having been the first in the dragon's cave after the dragon's leaving meant the dragon's hoard was his by right--and the generous benefactor who would soon be called Baron Cliché by the citizens. Within five years, he was also husband to one Elizabeth--a stout nag who kept him very much henpecked. After her passing shortly thereafter, Roderic took leave of Delamar for the time being, venturing into the Mythago Wood to meet the Elves living there and to take up temporary residence.
This temporary residence turned into a very long one; the plump toymaker grew into a fast and deep friendship with the Elves and their families who lived there. Taking on the name of Elder Fullness while living with them, Roderic stayed there, not visibly aging for the next fifty years, rousing some suspicions from his Elven hosts who recognized a potent, ancient magic about him but not recognizing the source of such. At the end of this fifty years, he inherited a magical role known as Father Winter--an Elven character devoted to the well-being of children and to the caring for the community around him.
At this point, Roderic's history is muddled. During the night of his ascension to the role of Father Winter, on attaining the magical powers and heritage of Father Winter, Roderic involuntarily changed into Bracchus in his sleep, waking in a pained and shocked fury as Elven magic mixed very poorly with his own. Taking flight in blinded rage, the dragon then torched Roderic's house along with much of the surrounding village and the nearby Delamar--a fact that Roderic came to regret deeply on regaining his human body and senses.
