Giarc Conry is a fighter, a criminal, a thief, a rapist, and a killer...and he is proud of it.

The Streets of Gerul

Giarc Conry grew up in The Mires, a neighborhood in the capital city of Gerul, and boy did he fit right in. When he was ten, his parents died, freezing to death in a brutal Gerulean winter. It was at that point that the streets became Giarc's caretakers. He was forced to steal and compete in bare-knuckle boxing matches for coin and food.

It didn't take long for Giarc to be taken in by the wrong crowd. In his case, it was the Grinsmen, a vicious gang of hoodlums known by their scarified "smiles"; the scars earned and worn as badges of honor.

For years Giarc worked up the ranks of the Grinsmen, establishing himself as a loyal brother in the gang and a go-to guy for the most atrocious of jobs. After countless murders, robberies, and heists, he had earned his right to be cut so that any and all who looked upon him would know him as a Grinsman.

He sat in a chair without tethers, without being held and opened his mouth. Two brothers stood on either side, slid knives into his mouth. At the count of three, they slashed the knives outward, slicing through his cheeks from the corners of his mouth all the way to his jawbone just below his ears. Although the pain was severe, the pride outweighed. When the wound healed, two thick scars remained, giving him the infamous Grinsman Smile.

Some months after his scars had healed, the twenty year old Conry was caught raping a young girl and subsequently arrested by the Gerulean Guard. He was found guilty and placed in Tréigthe Prison.

Gaol Fighter Scandal

Little did Giarc know, but his street fighting experiences were going to be his ticket to success in the prison system. During an altercation with guards, Giarc's skills were noted by a guard and shared with Rufus Mulchurius, a notorious underlord and black marketier.

Shortly after, Mulchurius paid Conry a visit, explaining a system of illegal boxing matches that were taking place in Trae Kelsan jails and that if he was able to win a certain amount of fights, he would be able to earn his freedom and could rejoin his fellow Grinsmen.

Giarc jumped at the chance and, as a result, was transferred to the Myrken Gaol in Myrken Wood, which, at the time, was a training facility and host to these illegal bare-knuckle bouts.[1]

Giarc's first fight was scheduled to be against Thorshu Vengaard, a half-orc pit fighter. However, prior to the match, Giarc was poisoned by a guard who had money on the half-orc. The guard was only trying to make Giarc mildly sick, but ended up incapacitating Giarc with vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions.[2]

After a week of sickness Giarc got his revenge on the guards. He started by destroying his cell, giving cause for the guards to come and investigate. When they did, he attacked them. This was no ordinary attack, however, because Giarc had covered himself with his own feces.[3]

Escape

Giarc actually never fought a single organized bout in jail. Rather, he was visited and freed from his cell by the drow, Audmathus. His savior left a message in blood upon the wall…

"Blood upon the wall -- how many shall fall?"[4]

Giarc fled Myrken Wood heading back home.
