Roderic Cliché is a short, quiet, tubby little man who claims to be nearing sixtyHe has spent very little time actually in Myrken Wood--merely long enough to establish a toy shop in the heart of town, meet and befriend Aloisius Treadwell, and then pass on the mantle of Father Winter, which the dragon turned human held for some time, to Myrken's tax collecting Councilor.  This passing of magic from one man to the other--something that ultimately ended up being temporary due to Treadwell's misuse of such--was the last that anyone in Myrken Wood saw of Roderic.  He left his toy store in his successor's hands and simply wandered off, pale and ill, into the night.

Roderic Cliché is a short, quiet, plump, elderly man.  Gray and balding, with an enormously fluffy mustache, Roderic usually dresses in gold-rimmed eyeglasses, much simpler robes, and soft sandals, walking about with a cane and a slight stoop.  He is usually cautious around others, particularly whenever in a public inn or around adventurers.

In truth, there are a number of sides to Mr. Cliché; he presented himself first and foremost as a quiet, though jolly when met, toymaker.  Secretly, he held the aforementioned role of Father Winter, a personage held in some esteem mostly by elven communities some distance from Myrken Wood; the tradition of such was only newly reintroduced to the town primarily by Aloisius Treadwell, although some older records of the Father exist in Altruian Mudd's Library of Mudd.  Roderic was rumored to hold a great number of other magical abilities, many of them bestowed on his old self by adoring children.

This image, however, is a front; the lovable, cautious toymaker is a shape-shifted body used to hide the presence of an aged, corpulent, two-headed dragon named Bracchus.  Rather than deal with the infirmities of being a dragon of advanced age and rather than deal with the assaults on his person and hoard that would come with such, the great wyrm chose to hide himself from smaller eyes, a deception he has maintained well throughout the years.

Roderic, in the past, has delved deeply into one such ability when talking to those same children, though always in jest: he always seems to have one tale or another about his ability to turn into an ancient (and quite friendly!) black dragon that was long since thought dead or merely legendaryThat dragon supposedly has an immense appetite and a neverending failure to land properlyThat dragon is named Bracchus, though Roderic himself never gave anyone in town visible proof of being able to change into such.

The truth of the matter is, of course, that he really is the big dragon in question, and, as of late, he is spending more and more time as the great lizard, especially at night.  Most evenings and nights, it seems that Bracchus can be found wallowing in the muddy shore and cool water of Silver Lake, occasionally taking his fill of passing fishThis real identity as a great old dragon merely brings one more fact to light: despite whatever age Roderic says he is, he certainly is not a mere fifty-nine years old.

Description

Roderic Cliché is a short, quiet, plump, elderly man. Gray and balding, with an enormously fluffy mustache, Roderic usually dresses in gold-rimmed eyeglasses, much simpler robes, and soft sandals, walking about with a cane and a slight stoop. He is usually cautious around others, particularly whenever in a public inn or around adventurers.

Background

Origins

Being an ancient dragon in disguise, Roderic has lived much longer than he ever readily admits. Seeming to be perpetually just shy of old age and claiming to be "Somewhere around sixty years, I think?", Mr. Cliché's first known appearance dates back to the second of the twelfth month, in A.R. 100, when the old man was found lying unconscious and naked except for his eyeglasses in a dragon's cave a mile from the small hamlet of Delamar. Originally claiming to be largely forgetful of much of his history before he woke in the back bedroom of the town's church, he soon proved himself both the richest man present--arguing successfully that his having been the first in the dragon's cave after the dragon's leaving meant the dragon's hoard was his by right--and the generous benefactor who would soon be called Baron Cliché by the citizens. Within five years, he was also husband to one Elizabeth--a stout nag who kept him very much henpecked. After her passing shortly thereafter, Roderic took leave of Delamar for the time being, venturing into the Mythago Wood to meet the Elves living there and to take up temporary residence.

This temporary residence turned into a very long one; the plump toymaker grew into a fast and deep friendship with the Elves and their families who lived there. Taking on the name of Elder Fullness while living with them, Roderic stayed there, not visibly aging for the next fifty years, rousing some suspicions from his Elven hosts who recognized a potent, ancient magic about him but not recognizing the source of such. At the end of this fifty years, he inherited a magical role known as Father Winter--an Elven character devoted to the well-being of children and to the caring for the community around him.

At this point, Roderic's history is muddled. During the night of his ascension to the role of Father Winter, on attaining the magical powers and heritage of Father Winter, Roderic involuntarily changed into Bracchus in his sleep, waking in a pained and shocked fury as Elven magic mixed very poorly with his own. Taking flight in blinded rage, the dragon then torched Roderic's house along with much of the surrounding village and the nearby Delamar--a fact that Roderic came to regret deeply on regaining his human body and senses.

The Elves of the Mythago Wood knew that Roderic was alive--the magic invested into their new Father Winter had not been passed to another as it would have on his death or his voluntary surrender of those powers--but they knew nothing of where he was nor were they willing or able to hunt down the black, two-headed dragon responsible for the destruction. They were also ignorant of the possibility that Roderic himself was the culprit for such damage. Therefore, though Roderic has had no further dealings with these Elves in the ensuing decades, they would very much care for the safe return of their Elder Fullness to them, especially given the seeming absence of the black dragon that destroyed their homes and destroyed their families.

Recent History

Mister Cliché would eventually resurface in the mid-200s in Myrken Wood: unharmed, unaged, and unwilling to discuss any of his past from the final five and a half decades. He struck up a fast friendship with then-Councilor Aloisius Treadwell on settling into a storefront in the middle of town, near the Deck--a storefront that would eventually progress from being Cliché Toys to the current site of Tready's Toys. He would begin teaching Treadwell about making toys and would eventually pass on the mantle of Father Winter to the tax collector. This passing of magic from one man to the other--something that ultimately ended up being temporary due to Treadwell's misuse of such--was the last that anyone in Myrken Wood saw of Roderic for a time. He left his toy store in his successor's hands and simply wandered off, pale and ill, into the night.

The Present

After a brief reappearance in Myrken Wood in between July and December of AR 206, Roderic spent several years in New Dauntless, taking on a role of a traveling toymaker for hire. On finding minimal work there, he sought to return to Myrken Wood, there to offer himself as a business partner with the newly christened Lord Steward Aloisius Treadwell and as a potential suitor to Aloisius' sister, Elizia. Roderic remains perpetually cautious and nervous, though, on careful lookout for all manner of adventurers and Elves. As of November, AR 216, though, he has sent Treadwell a letter stating that he must return to long unfinished business with the Elves of Mythago Wood, removing himself from his position of traveling salesman and assistant to Tready's Toys.

Plots

Roderic is not currently invested in any particular ongoing plots.
