:This article refers to the mythical race of Dungeons & Dragons. For the "drow" of Scottish folklore as well as other examples of dark elves and black elves from mythology, folklore, and fantasy fiction, see Dark elf.

Drow are a species of elf in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Etymologically, the term is probably derived from the Shetland Isles Drow (Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1970) states: "Drow, n., [scot.] A tiny elf which lived in caves and forged magical metal work."). The word's origin is identical to the origin of the word "troll," which both go back further to the Scottish Gaelic word spelled "trow." The original Scottish Gaelic word is pronounced "dtrow" with a soft "dt" sound, and the original pronunciation sounds similar to "troll." The word is also found in Cornish and Welsh with slight pronunciation differences. The race itself seems based on another dark elf, specifically the Dokkalfar of [orse mythology.

Drow, or "dark elves" as they are called by most surface dwellers, are an offshoot of the elven race. Drow are characterized by white or silver hair, obsidian black skin, and red (or rarely gray, violet, or yellow) eyes, as well as innate spell powers and spell resistance. This is balanced by their weakness in daylight. Also, drow weapons and armor (usually made of adamantite or another metal unique to the Underdark) slowly lose their magical properties if exposed to the sun. Drow also employ the unusual dart-firing hand crossbow.

Half-drow are the result of crossbreeding between humans and drow, and share characteristics of both.

Drow characters are extremely intelligent, charismatic and dextrous, but share surface elves' comparative frailty and slight frames. As a race they are usually evil. Drow males are commonly wizards or fighters. Females are almost always clerics and almost never wizards.

Drow hate elves, but wage war with almost any surface and subterranean races, such as mind flayers, svirfneblin, duergar, and kuo-toa for spoils and territory. Their society is matriarchal, with priestesses of the goddess Lolth (Lloth in the drow tongue) in the highest seats of power. Males are either enslaved or (rarely) respected if they are powerful wizards, but never allowed to rule. The drow sometimes use their dark arts to turn human slaves into living sculptures.

The Order of Straka is a group of guardsmen and women who are dedicated to the policing of Myrken Wood and its surrounds.

History
Many years ago, the Order of Straka came into being. Named for the Goddess Straka to whom its services were dedicated, the Order of Straka soon became reknowned for their devoted pursuit of peace and their swift execution of justice. But alas, times change, and with the passing of the years, the Order gradually dissipated, leaving a void in their wake that could not be filled. The lands fell into disarray, the people subject to both petty crime, and greater atrocities.

But history has a way of repeating itself. In time, the need for a new Order was recognized and before long, the Order was resurrected; a phoenix reborn from the ashes of its own demise. Its numbers are slowly growing and, once more, Law has a place within the Myrken lands.

Current Members
*Captain Thomas Daniels: An honest fellow who has always given his best to his job and the Myrken people; he lost his arm in an assassination attempt, but maintains a level outlook and continues to serve.
*Lieutenant Joshua Kilborn: One of the more prominent guards, even if not seen about the Dagger all that often. Firm head on his shoulder, and an ability to make quick decisions. Not always the most popular guardsman, is known at least to be impeccable with the fairness of his sentencings. Is decidedly unfond of politics.
*Lieutenant Matthew Duvall: He was a prominent Lieutenant under Captain Taliaferro, and even had a shot at Captain, but after Taliaferro's resignation he became far more scarce. His past is a little shady, and he was known for the occasional illegal dealing back in his desert homeland. He is largely reformed, but isn't above using old contacts to better do his job as a guardsman. He takes the assignments that let him get out of the city, particularly if he can get out of the city for a long time.
*Lieutenant Steven Miller: The least heard-of Lieutenant. Was also handpicked by the Captain to help guard Joseph O'Cynen against the evil Baie.
*Weaponsmaster Tovil: Lead weaponsmaster and trainer amongst the guardsmen. Is in charge of ensuring everyone knows how to use their blade well enough not to fall on it.
*Sergeant Learn Barrows: A patrolman. Loyalty is primary to Lt. Kilborn. Also one of the few guardsmen capable of reading and writing.
*Sergeant Otis: A tobacco chewing, spitting, foul mouthed, smelly sort of individual. Known for an ability to find things. Known to hang out at the gaol. Enjoys taking the rounds with the cooks as they serve the prisoners' meals.
*Sergeant John Rubrecht: Was nominated for Guard with the Loudest Voice on various occassions. Would make a great motivational speaker. Large man, quite capable and willing of getting his own hands dirty. A favoured member of the Guard.
*Corporal Alan Tallfern: No doubt another that's overdue a promotion, though he seems particularly content in his job as Corporal. An eldery chap, that's friendly and careful. Respected for getting his fellow armsmen out of tight situations alive.
*Private Janis Williams: A resourceful woman who's received special assignments on occassion. Is currently on the lookout for the demon drow as well. Was temporarily assigned as Joseph O'Cynen's bodyguard against the Baie.
*Guardswoman Kerri: A patrolwoman.
*Guardsman Raifley: Most known for being the only one of the four guardsman that took the demon drow Audmathus on at the Guardhouse and lived. An expert swordsman with cool head on his shoulders.
*Guardswoman Ryan Spencer: Always seems to be bubbling over with enthusiasm for everything. A morale builder in that she's simply unstoppable once her mind is made up. No doubt a favourite student of Tovil's.
*Adjunct Key Lannew: Kilborn's aide at the Guardhouse. Every Lieutenant should have an aide as dedicated and skilled as Key. Makes his difficult jobs just slightly easier.
*Mort: A trapper/tracker occassionally employed by the guards. He has dogs named Ness, Lou, Vick, and Jessie.

An OOC Explanation
The Guards have been put in place to add atmosphere, entertainment, and realism to the channel (after all, where's the fun in playing a villain, if there's no-one around who'll try to foil your evil plans?). Players who play Guardsmen are not necessarily Operators, so their OOC word is not Law. The Order's Guards are purely an IC device and your characters will not be required in any way to deal with the Guards or the listed laws, anymore than you'd be required to interact with any other character in play. As always, it is you who has the right to decide your character's destiny; the Guard's purpose is your entertainment.

Coriolanus Helstone is, quite simply, a very good lawyer.

Known to friends as 'Cory,' Helstone is a native of a well-established family in the eastern Amasynian town of Collingford. He studied law at a prestigious university there before setting up a private practice in Myrkentown.

He prides himself in maintaining a high level of sartorial fastidiousness, often bypassing Myrken Wood's textile industry to work with higher-end Thessilanean tailors where possible. On the town or in the courtroom, his hair is always perfect and his hands always neat; visitors to his office are known to notice its remarkable state of cleanliness.

To support his high standard of living, Helstone is a prolific worker, helping Myrkenites settle and process real estate disputes, draw up wills, mediate controversies and fix the day-to-day affairs of town, and has also spent quite a bit of time in trial as both prosecution and defense in criminal cases. Although he is not known to take pro-bono or charity cases, his fees are not known to be exorbitant.

Helstone keeps a brusque, businesslike exterior, but is generally a pleasant and genial face to meet around town. He is shy rather than suave when it comes to women, and remains a quiet but effective voice when speaking out about matters of Myrken Wood law, which he does quite often. He prefers diplomacy to swordplay and frowns on military solutions when lawful, book-borne resolutions can be gained.

Helstone spends a good deal of time in conversation with all sorts of people at the Broken Dagger, where he is known to drink nothing but black tea.

Cases
-- Last summer, Helstone served as counsel during a trial accusing then-Governor Altias Bromn, his bodyguard Ariane Carnath-Emory, and tavern bartender Mikhail of multiple counts of murder outside the Broken Dagger tavern. He secured a complete acquittal on grounds of self-defense and extenuating circumstances.

-- Most recently, Helstone represented Councilor Suede Roschen when the Councilor was accused by Straka Captain Thomas Daniels of black-market activity and a possible slaying. Roschen has since been reinstated to the Council, and Helstone remains tight-lipped about his involvement with that matter.

Jirai is, without a doubt, one of the less-savory types to be found in Myrken Wood, a fact made obvious by the care she takes to hide her face from all. Standing a scant five feet in height, she is almost always garbed in a long, dark cloak with a deep hood that serves to hide her features from all but the most prying of eyes. Beneath that cloak, her clothing is well-cut, but otherwise unremarkable. What really draws a person's gaze, however, is generally the array of weapons she carries openly. No less than a short sword, two daggers, and an odd-looking crossbow are usually visible, and those who know her know that there are probably more concealed about her person.

She is known among the seedier side as a fairly reliable source of information on a wide variety of subjects - for a price, of course. Among the Order of the Straka, she is known for having a bit of a loose hand with her daggers, and recently had several charges brought against her. The dissapation of the Order seems to have laid those to rest, however.

There was a bit of a stir when she began openly working for Suede Roschen, Councilor of Agriculture, as a body guard.

Most recently, she seems to have allied herself with the drow invasion
