Description
Alcara is the youngest of the Bloodletters, only twenty-tree years of age. She is something of a free spirit and is notably unconcerned with what her comrades want and expect of her, showing obedience to Crucia alone. Out of all the Bloodletters, she is the most outwardly optimistic and playful, baring her fangs only when it becomes obvious that she can't charm her way to the desired outcome.

Physically, she is lithe and agile like an animal, displaying catlike grace and incredible dexterity. She incorporates acrobatics and the graceful movements of a dancer into her fighting style, her weapon of choice being a twelve-foot whip with a blade at the tip that she wields to great affect, allowing her both reach and a means with which to disorient her target, as the whip snakes and snaps through the air around her. She prioritizes keeping some small amount of distance between herself and foes, allowing her to strike at them from several yards away while they are unable to land a blow in return.

Alcara's Manifestation is referred to as Affection, the ability to change the world around her in various ways, the effects proportionate to the amount of energy that she expends. Unlike the powers utilized by her comrades, intense concentration is not required to Manifest in this way, but expending too much energy at once can physically and mentally damage Alcara, often requiring time to recuperate from the magical feedback.

As an innate ability that has yet to be defined or explained, any magic or power other than her own does not have any effect on Alcara. Because of this, Crucia is unable to Bind her in the same way as the other Bloodletters, and Alcara's body rejects all forms of healing magic.

Background
Origins
Alcara is the only Bloodletter is not originally from Mixalydia, having been born into a nomadic caravan in the neighboring desert nation of Jernich. At a young age, brigands razed the camp and slaughtered its inhabitants, save for Alcara, who was safely hidden away by her mother. She was discovered hours later by Crucia, whom the girl mistook for a brigand and nearly killed, and Selwyn during one of their earliest assignments. Seeing something of herself in the girl, Crucia promised to keep the girl from harm in an extremely rare display of genuine affection.

Alcara returned to Mixalydia with Crucia and was informally adopted by the woman, living under the same roof and breaking bread with her. Crucia watched the girl closesly, eventually learning that Alcara was completely unaffected by magic, including her ability to Bind others. After much deliberation and despite opposition from all sides, including the king himself (whose doubts she managed to assuage with the promise of solid results), Crucia made the decision to induct Alcara into the Bloodletters, teaching her to wield weapons and hone her powers.

Though she proved to be one of the most competent agents the Bloodletters had to offer, and easily the most dangerous in combat, not all were happy with Crucia's decision, considering her to be a wild card that could wreak havoc should she decide to bite the hand that fed her. Among them was Michta Vess, the king's personal advisor, who insisted that the girl be dealt with. The king eventually agreed and an attempt on her life was made that backfired and ended with the king's own death. Alcara fled the kingdom by ship but was unable to outrun the vessels in pursuit of her own. Her ship was burned, and in a spur-of-the-moment decision, she Affected herself to prevent the fire from killing her, and was thrown from the ship in the process.

Clinging weakly to debris from the destroyed ship, she eventually drifted onto the northern shore of New Dauntless and was found on the beach by a band of traveling entertainers. They replaced her uniform with mundane clothing and nursed her back to health. Having drawn far too heavily upon her powers upon the ship, Alcara had managed to damage her mind in the process, affecting her memory prior to awakening. As a result, she adopted a new persona in order to adjust to her immediate circumstances, calling herself the "Vixen".

The Broken Dagger
Alcara's memory abruptly returned during a confrontation with Crucia and Kess in Myrkenwood, shortly after the Bloodletters arrived in town and on the same night that Bern Clydell and Egris Verreaux were attacked by Bale and Molleine. She subsequently returned to Crucia's side without hesitation.
Description
Crucia strikes most as an imposing figure, not so much because of her looks as her demeanor. Anyone close enough to hold a conversation with her will see madness dancing in the depths of her smiling eyes. Her oddly cheerful disposition is off-putting, something that she is not only aware of but uses to her advantage.

Outwardly charming, Crucia's sadistic nature lurks just beneath the surface and rears its head when she is angered. Even when in a good mood, she possesses a threatening air about her that makes most people uneasy.

She possesses the ability to augment and manipulate the pain of others, to a degree. She can make others perceive a sewing needle piercing the thigh as a lance goring them, or shut down their nerve endings and make them watch in horror as she extracts their intestines by the handful, without them feeling a thing.

Because of the magic that courses through her veins, her body rejects all magical healing from an outside source, and she revels in physical pain as long as it is not immediately life threatening.

She wields an tool of her own design, a slender black crop called the Agony, which allows her to exercise her powers in a number of ways. Among other things, she is able to heal the injuries of others (to a degree) and store the accompanying pain inside the tool, which she can later inflict on others, and she can cause others to revisit the pain of past injuries by touching the tool to scar tissue. In both cases, the trauma is not mental rather than physical, but the victim will wholeheartedly believe that they are experiencing the injury once more.

Lastly, she is able to establish mental ties with individuals who possess supernatural or magical abilities in a process called Binding. These links are one-way channels through which Crucia can perceive the world through the senses of the Bound person and, should she so desire, sever the link and end their life by destroying their minds during her retreat. To Bind someone, they must remain within thirty feet of Crucia for as long as it takes to break down their mental defenses, which varies from person to person.

The process takes significantly longer if the person does not possess supernatural or magical abilities, as Crucia must first instill a portion of her magic within the person to act as a hook for her to latch onto with her powers.

Background
Origins
As a young girl, she was abducted by the Hidden Hand when at the age of nine, when she was living in the back alleys of the kingdom as an orphan. She was subjected to painful experimentation for three years, resulting in a resistance to magical effects years later as her body grew more accustomed to the strange forces she was exposed to. In the course of that time, she rebuilt herself, establishing a new persona that was better equipped to handle the mental and physical stress that was imposed on her by the experimentation.

Eventually, she retaliated against her captors. On the day that a scientist overseeing the procedures loosened her restraints, he turned his back, thinking her unconscious. In the course of thirty minutes, she had killed seven people, four of them armed, with a scalpel, before she was incapacitated.

The general consensus was that she was becoming more dangerous each day, and that the experiments had failed. The scientists in charge of the project wished to dispose of her and start anew, but the king, Branson II, saw the potential that the girl displayed. He instead proposed the one thing that the scientists dreaded: giving the girl autonomy.

As he had predicted, Crucia responded favorably to the course of action. She was given her own room in the castle and allowed to dine with the king at his table in the evening. In a sense, he was her savior, despite being the one that had approved the experimentation in the first place. Said experiments were ended once she began to exhibit powers of her own: the ability to dampen physical and mental energies in others. No magic could harm her, and she learned to turn spells back on their casters.

There was another side affect to the magic coursing through her: an unstable nature that was prone to violence. The king provided her with the perfect outlet: prisoners. Those that were considered useless were turned over to the girl, who was only twelve years old at the time. At first, she butchered them like an animal, anger driving her hand. But over time, a sense of curiosity and malicious creativity surfaced, and she began to do experiments of her own on the men and women presented to her. She invented unthinkably cruel ways of torturing them, and the king saw another opportunity.

She was given an official station at sixteen years old as an inquisitor, used to get information from captured soldiers of rival kingdoms. She proved to be more than capable of the responsibilities she bore, and enjoyed the task to boot. She continued to prove her devotion to the king by unfailingly extracting secrets from her victims, giving the Mixalydian military valuable information that gave it an advantage.

She became a scientist of sorts, experimenting with her powers. She crafted her tool, called the Agony, to aid her in her efforts. With it, she could enhance or dull pain to learn the working of the body. She pursued her tasks with a fondness that bordered on insanity.

Once the king realized what a boon her accomplishments were, he named her leader of a group he christened the Bloodletters, his personal task force. They acted as inquisitors, the kingdom's secret police, and a private task force for the king. Crucia led them with a sense of authority that brooked no argument, and severely punished those who crossed her.

The Broken Dagger
Crucia has been seen in the streets of Myrkentown with a number of similarly dressed men and women, although they are rarely found together.

The Present
Crucia and her companions have taken up stations around various parts of Myrkentown, inquiring vaguely about a friend who went missing. They seem to be searching for someone named "Felle", who bears a striking resemblance to a certain dancer.

Description
Vennette appears at a glance to be no more than an ordinary child, her delicate features and short stature suggesting that she has not yet begun the journey towards womanhood. In reality, she is one of the older members of the Bloodletters, just two years Selwyn's junior, her physical growth stunted by the nature of her abilities. Her mind is that of an adult woman in her mid-twenties, albeit warped by her training and profession. She is dismissive of others in the extreme and views the world around her in terms of power: only the strong are fit to rule. Coupled with a no nonsense-attitude and a profound distaste for those she deems to be beneath her, she rarely hesitates to unleash her powers before questions are asked, more concerned with results than the repercussions of her actions.

Vennette's Manifestation is referred to as Fright, the power to delve into a person's psyche and learn their fears, misgivings, and doubts. She uses the information gleaned from their mind to create a virtual prison in which the victim is trapped and exposed to their greatest fears. The illusions interact with the victim in a way that reinforces the negative emotions that drive them, producing sound, smell, changes in temperature, and other small factors that serve to make the Fear seem more realistic to the victim. Maintaining the illusion requires focus on Vennette's part, and she can only Manifest when she is not physically hindered. Because of this, she abhors being in close quarters with others, and will tend to hang back while her comrades intercept potential threats.

Under normal circumstances, Fright can be maintained for up to five minutes without interruption, after which Vennette must rest. When distracted or under pressure, the illusions come in much shorter instances and are much more vague. If, however, Vennette is able to achieve total concentration and shut the world around her out, she can Frighten someone for up to half an hour and render the illusions as lifelike as possible. The latter is her preferred method of torture, breaking her victims without ever once having to resort to physical violence.

Background
Origins
Vennette was initially brought to Crucia's attention by Selwyn, who discovered her after she was dismissed from the College of Magecraft in Mixalydia on the grounds that her experiments on living human subjects went against everything the institution stood for. Livid with what she considered to be short-sightedness on their part, she was intrigued by what the Bloodletters had to promise her: as many test subjects as she desired, under the condition that she join their order. She eventually agreed, allowing Crucia to Bind and break her with no resistance on her part.

From that point on, she did as she was told by Crucia while simultaneously continuing to study the human mind and the many ways in which her power affected it. She was often partnered with Selwyn for protection when operating in the field.

The Broken Dagger
Vennette accompanied Crucia and the others to Myrken in search of Alcara (Vixen). She was encountered by Glenn Burnie in the marketplace, where she attempted to Frighten the man before Selwyn interfered. Despite the failed effort, she commented that Glenn's mind had been 'touched' previously by Rhaena Olwak.
Description
Selwyn is rarely without his knowing smirk and swagger, giving the impression that he is unconcerned with the task at hand. He enjoys having others doubt him and his abilities, reveling in their surprise when he does eventually display his prowess, both in and out of combat. He likes to gauge the abilities of others and learn things about them that he can use to his advantage, especially their personal philosophies, which he pokes holes in when he bests them. He is prone to monolouging and being a devil's advocate in general, traits that frustrate his comrades. He is also incredibly sadistic, even by the Bloodletters' standards.

Selwyn's manifestation is referred to as Mirroring, which at a glance looks to the untrained eye as if he is copying his opponent's fighting style and countering their attacks. In actuality, he is able to anticipate a person's next thought or action to some extent and act accordingly, moving with their attacks and striking when the opportunity presents itself. Wielding an black gauntlet with sharp fingertips and spiked knuckles, he prefers close-quarters combat and excels at one-on-one fights. His weakness makes itself known when he is faced with multiple opponents, unable to Mirror more than one person's actions at a time. In addition, his ability requires intense concentration and footwork that drains his energy reserves and forces him to rest as soon as possible once the threat has been dealt with.

Background
Origins
Selwyn is the second original member of the Bloodletters and was the first person that Crucia personally trained, a process she refers to as "breaking". Originally a petty thief that used his powers to stay one step ahead of those who pursued him, he was caught by palace guards when he attempted to steal from the Mixalydian treasury. Despite the punishment of his crime being execution by hanging, Crucia was impressed that he had made it into the vault without being detected and deemed him a possible candidate for assisting her as a fellow inquisitor. He proved to be more tenacious than he first appeared when she broke him, and though he resented her at first, he believed that living under her control was better than dying.

Over time, he found that he agreed with the majority of Crucia's methods and personal philosophies, and his reluctance to willingly stand at her side gradually faded. In addition to finding someone with whom he meshed personality-wise, he was delighted with the freedoms his position allowed him. Because of his unspoken rank within the organization, he tends to look down on the others and belittle them.

The Broken Dagger
Selwyn accompanied Crucia and the others to Myrken in pursuit of their missing comrade, Alcara (Vixen). He was first seen outside the Kamoreta by Gloria Wynsee when she eavesdropped on his conversation with Crucia. He made a second appearance in the marketplace with Vennette in tow, where the two of them exchanged tense words with Glenn Burnie on their mistress's orders.
Description
Vixen is a lively young woman who embraces most situations with confidence and optimism, leading many to believe that she is carefree to a fault. Truth be told, she is a performer through and through and understands the importance of raising morale in adverse situations, that laughter is the best medicine, and that there is power in positive thinking. While she often harbors doubts about herself and the situations she finds herself in, she only rarely confides in others, preferring instead to take her mind and the minds of others off of things by dancing. She is surprisingly deft with a knife and her trademark bladed whip, possessing a curious knowledge of the body's vital organs and key pressure points, something she can't explain.

Many of her words and actions come across as flirtatious, but she is largely unaware of this. While her manner of dress is often suggestive, she believes that it adds exotic appeal to her performances and overall image. On the rare occasions that she does try to seduce someone, she more often than not blunders horribly. Otherwise, the things she says are heartfelt and candid, even if they aren't perceived as such.

She has picked up several styles of dancing over the past few years from travelling entertainers, but is partial to those with an exotic flair or fast movements. Years of dancing have made her lithe and agile, making her the perfect candidate for stealth operations and roguery in general, though she would need to have a valid reason to participate in either.

As quick and flexible as she is, Vixen doesn't like to take risks when it comes to fighting. She avoids close-quarters melee combat when possible and relies heavily on the bladed whip she carries at her hip, striking out at adversaries from a short distance with surprising precision. If all else fails, she will either fall back (reluctantly) on the dagger strapped to her thigh, or turn tail and run after making sure that her allies are out of harm's way.

Vixen also possesses the power of illusion, to a small extent. More precisely, her feelings may sometimes manifest themselves in magical form in times of heightened emotion. This occurs most commonly during performances, but has been known to happen in times of emotional turmoil or elation. The magic is purely mind affecting and does not effect others physically, only mentally. The effects are usually visual, but may sometimes be a tangible emotion or a whisper in the back of the mind.

Background
Origins
Vixen was originally unable to recall any of the events in her life prior to awakening on the shore of the Beradt Sea in Eastern New Dauntless. She experienced brief visions of a former life lasting only seconds when exposed to triggers, but nothing substantial enough to piece together anything that would make sense.

During her time in Myrken, she encountered Crucia, who struck her as oddly familiar. When she later sought the woman out on her own, it was revealed that Vixen was, until very recently, an agent of the Bloodletters named Alcara.

The Broken Dagger
After she awoke on the shore of New Dauntless, she wandered aimlessly in a disoriented state wearing a strange red leather uniform. A band of entertainers travelling to Edirne from Meadowford happened upon her and, believing her to be injured, nursed her back to health, removing the uniform in the process and replacing it with dancer's garb. She displayed signs of aggression and frustration in her stupor, which became less frequent as she became lucid over several days. When she was finally able to hold a conversation, it became apparent to her saviors that she had no memory of any event prior to waking up among them, and only a hazy inkling of what had taken place over the past few days.

Instinctively, she began piecing together a new persona for herself to make up for the gaps in her memory, mirroring the troupe she now traveled with. She became vibrant and lively, expressing delight over the smallest things with almost childlike wonder, as though she was seeing everything for the first time. She proved to be quite skilled in learning dances, and it became a passion, as well as a way to earn her keep.

Before long, she was considered a key performer in the troupe, which had done better than usual for itself in Edirne with the addition of its newest member and headed for Myrken Wood, along the Dauntine Road. They arrived in Foggy Bottom, where entertainers of all kinds could be found. In order to stand out, many performers used stage names to spice up the appeal of their acts, and so she adopted the name "Vixen" to grab the attention of the audience. The name stuck, and she drummed up more business than the troupe had ever seen.

The Present
During the month long stay in Foggy Bottom, Vixen learned through hearsay that a group in Myrkentown was searching for a woman wearing a red uniform. Excited by the thought of learning something about herself, she thanked the troupe for all they had done for her and promised to find them once she finished her business, then set out to Myrkentown right away, hoping to find the group.

The process takes significantly longer if the person does not possess supernatural or magical abilities, as Crucia must first instill a portion of her magic within the person to act as a hook for her to latch onto with her powers.

Background
Origins
As a young girl, she was abducted by the Hidden Hand when at the age of nine, living in the back alleys of the kingdom as an orphan.

She was given an official station at sixteen years old as a torturer used to get information from captured soldiers of rival kingdoms.

She crafted her tool, called the Dirge, to aid her in her efforts. With it, she could enhance or dull pain to learn the working of the body. She pursued her tasks with a fondness that bordered on madness.

Once the king realized what a boon her efforts were, he named her leader of a group he christened the Bloodletters, his personal task force.

Little to nothing is known about them by the locals.

The Present
Crucia and her companions have taken up stations around various parts of Myrkentown, inquiring vaguely about a friend who went missing. They seem to be searching for someone named "Felle", who bears a striking resemblance to a certain dancer.

Description
Mische is indifferent to the majority of things that take place around her. She expresses hardly any form of emotion, ranging from cool disinterest to utter detachment, making interaction with others a thoroughly awkward experience for all parties involved. She disregards most social norms in favor of a mostly nihilistic philosophy that she upholds, believing that individuals serve no objective purpose and that the values and beliefs of the races are meaningless.

She appears to be a young woman just out of her teens, with straight white hair that obscures the right half of her face and an unnaturally frail build that suggests she is not human. Her one visible eye is a gleaming silver that is visible even in the dark, and her skin is milky white. Her outfit is a simple gown woven entirely of black silk with a plunging neckline and slit at the left hip, all the way to the hemline. A short cape of the same material hangs from her shoulders, and billowing sleeves fall past her fingertips.

She carries a simple wooden staff reminiscent of a shepherd's cane, with a crook at the end.

While she does not readily engage in conversation with others, she often turns to look over one shoulder for moments at a time, as though listening to someone speak.

Her powers manifest from her shadow and grow stronger in areas where there is little or poor light, as she is able to render darkness into tangible forms and manipulate it further.

Background
Origins
Mische's origin is currently unknown, as are most details about her. She confides in no one.

The Broken Dagger
Mische appeared in the streets of Myrkentown one evening after nightfall and has been seen several times since, walking with purpose and ignoring those around her. She has had only limited interaction with the townsfolk, asking simple questions a handful of times before moving on.

The Present
Despite her seeming lack of interest in the goings on of the world, she does appear to have some sort of agenda, though she keeps it entirely to herself, and little to nothing of her goals can be gleaned from the questions she has asked.
Description
Crucia strikes most as an imposing figure, not so much because of her looks as her demeanor. Anyone close enough to speak to her in a conversational tone will see barely controlled madness dancing in the depths of her smiling eyes. Her oddly cheerful disposition is off-putting, especially when she is covered from head to toe in someone else's blood.

Outwardly friendly and optimistic, Crucia's sadistic nature is carefully concealed and rears its head when she is angered. When furious, she often wears an out-of-place smile while she is butchering someone. Even when in a good mood, she possesses a threatening air about her that makes most people uneasy.

She possesses the ability to not only suppress the abilities of others, but to augment pain, to a degree. She can make others perceive a sewing needle piercing the thigh as a lance goring them, or shut down their nerve endings and make them watch in horror as she extracts their intestines by the handful, without them feeling a thing.

In addition, she is able to turn aside magic, both offensive and supportive, through the spells that course through her body. Her body rejects all magical healing from an outside source, and she revels in physical pain.

She wields an tool of her own design, a slender black crop referred to by her as the Dirge. It allows her to affect others upon contact in a variety of ways.

Background
Origins
As a young girl, she was abducted by the Hidden Hand when at the age of nine, living in the back alleys of the kingdom as an orphan.

She was given an official station at sixteen years old as a torturer used to get information from captured soldiers of rival kingdoms.

Little to nothing is known about them by the locals.

The Present
Crucia and her companions have taken up stations around various parts of Myrkentown, inquiring vaguely about a friend who went missing. They seem to be searching for someone named "Felle", who bears a striking resemblance to a certain dancer.
Description
Bern prefers not to get involved with other peoples' problems unless there's something in it for her. She is, however, fiercely loyal to the people she is contracted with, putting herself between them and danger without hesitation.

Her typical outfit is made up of padded leather armor with bared shoulders and a cutoff at the midriff. She wears forest green breeches tucked into knee-high boots with soles modified to muffle footsteps. A lengthy green scarf is wound about her neck, both ends hanging down her back to the waist. Fingerless leather gloves reach her elbows. She wears a cloak the color of damp ashes when it is necessary to remain inconspicuous.

She is agile and dexterous, armed with several throwing knives hidden on her person as well as two wickedly sharp daggers at her hips. She can strike accurately from a distance of fifteen feet, and will attempt to keep that much room between herself and her foe for as long as possible. If she is unable to incapacitate them with her throwing knives, she will quickly close the distance and do what she can to finish them off with her daggers.

She can come across as somewhat businesslike, with a no-nonsense undercurrent in everything she says. She remains extremely focused when working, and almost distracted when not.

She does not openly talk about her home or her family, and will react coldly when pressed for details about either, feigning disinterest in the subject.

Background
Origins
Rumors circulate among the bounty hunters of Myrkentown that Bern was a noble by marriage before she began her work as a guardian for hire. Some say that she killed her husband and is hiding from the authorities of her homeland, while others suggest that he is not only alive and well, but out for her blood. She is not forthcoming about the validity of these statements, and will usually stalk off if within earshot of someone discussing them.

The Broken Dagger
Bern arrived in Myrken Wood to work as a bodyguard and a bounty hunter in 211 AR. She frequents both the Floating Dragon and the Broken Dagger.

The Present
Bern can usually be found at the Floating Dragon inn when she has downtime, playing a hand of cards. She prefers to conduct all business with clients at the Broken Dagger, stating that she never works where she relaxes. She will, however, accommodate clients who insist on meeting at a specific location.

Offering her services as a bodyguard to those who can afford her, Bern draws a clear and distinct line between being a guardian and a sell sword.

Her fee is day-to-day, paid upfront. Clients can extend the contract, but she rarely takes on jobs lasting more than a month or one that requires her to travel. She does, however, make exceptions depending on what the client is willing to pay.

When not in the employ of another, Bern works as a bounty hunter, picking off marks in the surrounding area as a way to support herself as well as a way to keep her knives sharp.

Background
Origins
Vixen is unable to recall any of the events in her life prior to awakening on the shore of the Beradt Sea in Eastern New Dauntless. She experiences brief visions of a former life lasting only seconds when exposed to triggers, but nothing substantial enough to piece together anything that would make sense. The people she currently knows are either unaware of her past or not forthcoming.

Background
