==History==

According to earliest memory the militia, commanded then by the northerner General [[Eriks DeMord Sleipner]], was loosely based on an actual army. Rank was unofficial, and commanders were elected and removed by their troops. This militia was disbanded after Sleipner’s departure from [[Myrken Wood]] in late AR 206, and due to the resulting chaos among members, has not been mustered since.

In AR 205, it was Proxenus One-Eye who took an interest in the Militia - which, starved for leadership, more closely resembled a disorganized and aimless mob than the competent machine which it had been beneath the General's guidance. Proxenus took it upon himself to [http://www.brokendagger.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1466&p=8970#p8970 refine] and later command this militia's remnants, and their business became the handling of wide-scale emergencies such as war and drought that the [[Order of Straka]] could not capably address. Provided with only limited resources, the militia was comprised largely of footsoldiers armed with spears of crude quality, with light cavalry present only in very small numbers and limited solely to those volunteers wealthy enough to supply their own mounts. Under Proxenus, the militia largely involved itself with the digging of ditches against the fires which plagued Myrken throughout that year, and the reinforcement of key Myrkentown buildings.

After over a year’s inactivity, Myrken native, former farmhand and ex-Brotherhood soldier [[Agnieszka Kaczmarek]] was named to the vacant seat of militia Captain, signaling a possible reform of the organization. And so it was: during her time as Captain the Militia developed gradually into a well-organised deployment of volunteer manpower. Each village and town now had its own citizen militia whose members carried out regular training for the defence of Myrken's populace.

Ariane was born some twenty-odd years ago in the distant colony of [[Northern New Dauntless]]. Youngest child of mingled House Carnath-Emory, she grew early to adulthood, as is the way of things in this remote outpost. While she seldom details the events which transpired during her twelfth year there, this much is clear: that there was trouble enough that she felt the need to flee both House and home, and seek out her fortune elsewhere.

Years of wandering followed, during which she continued the fencing lessons she'd begun years ago, at the hands of her brother's tutor. A sellsword of gradually-growing repute, she found work in various companies (frequently posing as male) -- from a stint in [[The God-crushed War]], to service within the ill-fated group set to guard the Sorcerer's Guild in the distant city-state E'strielle. When the disaster befell them, the explosion of unshaped magical energies responsible worked a particularly strange effect upon young Ariane. The plate armour which was her uniform was liquified in an instant, and driven through the pores of her skin to flow with the very blood in her veins. Endowed with a sentience -- or perhaps only a <I>sensitivity</i> -- the armour rises in monofilaments from her skin at almost random periods, there to reform briefly into the platemail that it had originally been.

In the weeks which followed the disaster -- which had left a great, smoking crater in the heart of E'strielle -- the city's favour turned against magic and its derivatives. Being newly transformed into one of those herself, Ariane fled... nursing a newfound hatred for all things sorcerous. </div></div>

For years, she worked alongside [[Quincy Randall]], [[Tempestro Starr]], [[Jarek]], [[Lenore]] -- and even crotchety [[Pritchard]].

Everything changes, given enough time, and so was the case for Ariane. Over the years, she developed close friendships with her fellow bouncers, even taking [[Quincy Randall|Quincy]] for her beloved sister, regardless that there was no blood shared between them. At the capable hands of [[Johan Vornheim]], she began the slow process of learning to read what passes for [[Amasynia]]'s common tongue -- for such things were not taught to girl-children, in [[Northern New Dauntless|Northern Dauntless]]. [[Tempestro Starr|Starr]] taught her some mercy for magic-users, as did the sorceror [[Coran D'zir]], with whom she entered into a very odd bargain. She travelled by his side from coastal [[Westenford]] (there to confront corrupt [[Aloisius Treadwell]]) to the furtive pit-fights of [[Myrkentown]] itself; braved the lechery of obscene [[Avarante]] and the [[Order of Straka]], which remained a persistent threat to her ward up to the time of his violent death.

Second Lord of [[Lothbury Estate]] -- a holding of considerable size, positioned upon the outskirts of [[Myrkentown]] proper -- Giscard was born into a position of significant power and exquisite luxury. He is partial heir not only to monetary wealth (of which, mind, there is a great deal), but to the respect and esteem in which the family Guillaume has been held since the early days of its arrival in [[Myrken Wood]], centuries ago. Together with his elder brother, Giscard's daily business is the livelihood and prosperity of [[Lothbury Estate]], although unlike [[Vaughn Guillaume|Vaughn]], his responsibilities are largely administrative.

Given these facts, it was almost inevitable that Giscard would find a position upon Myrkentown's [[Judiciary Council]].

Elected to the Council by [[popular vote]] several years ago, Giscard has since held the position of [[Councilor for Trade and Commerce]]. During that time he has weathered the various scandals surrounding ''both'' [[Gad Phuri]]s, the threats of wicked drow [[Audmathus]], the indignities of the [[Order of Straka]], and a dreadful case of the [[Bloody Flux]]. Despite a period of recent seclusion within Lothbury, Giscard remains best-known for the strength of his lungs and the creation of [[The Wall]] -- the edifice which remains his most lasting legacy.

Northern New Dauntless is a small coastal territory to the far north of [[New Dauntless]]' uppermost provinces, some distance beyond the furthermost reach of [[Spinster's Range]]. It is difficult to reach, due to the scarcity of trade and settlements between its borders, and those of [[New Dauntless]] main; the region between the two is neither settled, nor flourishing with life, both rocky and chill. The coast offers reasonable fishing, but the farmlands are barely sufficient to support the life already present there.

== Location ==
Northern New Dauntless is situated on the northern coast of [[New Dauntless]], facing [[Red Caps Islands|The Red Caps Islands]], rather than [[Aja Islands|the Aja]]; it has the boast of being one of the nearest settlements to the infamous [[Hexal Isle]]. The area is comprised of several family groups of varying size, each with their own selection of farmland (such as it is) and building materials; it is said that those who dwell upon the coast know the most of prosperity.

== Climate ==
The area knows little in the way of true 'summer', although there are small celebrations to mark the coming of that season; certainly, what they have of a summer would hardly be recogniseable as such to an outsider. The temperatures remain below freezing point during October-February, rising as high as 50 degrees now and again during the middle of the year. There is one good fortune: that the lofty reaches of [[Spinster's Range]] actually block most of the worst weather heading south from [[New Dauntless]] main; however, this does nothing to assuage the fierce storms that occasionally head across the [[Sea of Amasynia]] (hurricanes of small severity are not a rareity), and their coastal location guarantees that the area is frequented by rain.

== Travel and Trade Routes ==
There is little in the way of trade through the area, given its isolation and lack of natural resources; while fishing can be had, it is difficult to transport such goods over the long distance between the area and [[New Dauntless]] main. Occasionally trade caravans set up shop near the border; they generally do not linger for long.

== Public Service ==
The Houses of Northern New Dauntless generally police their own people's doings, although [[House Nikolaev]] traditionally provides the area's guards, keeping watch over the coastline. When a House is unable to properly deal with one of its own's crimes -- or when a House itself is at fault -- a meeting is called of the various family patriarchs, and sentence carried out. At present, [[House Kalugin]] holds the most power in the region, and has for some sixty years; their word, above all others, is law. Houses presently holding noteworthy power (in order of prominence): [[House Kalugin|Kalugin]], [[House Nikolaev|Nikolaev]], [[House Chernevog|Chernevog]], [[House Ilin|Ilin]] and [[House Zhuravlev|Zhuravlev]].

There is little of notable worth in the area; trade occurs between the various Houses, and particularly those with coastal holdings -- fish is more plentiful than lamb or beef, the land supporting few of the latter. The land is not devoid of metal and mineral deposits, and although few are of any innate value, there is small trade of trinkets and ornaments; the finer quality of these have become prized amongst the more prominent Houses, and it is said even now that only [[House Kalugin]] can afford to wear its wealth upon its collar.

== Inception ==

Originally, Ariane was created by [[Carnath-Emory|Lex]] to be little more than an [[NPC]] for a friend's campaign. He wrote a very brief background for her; a name (hardly original!) and sketchy description were added. When it became evident that the move from [[The Silver Blade Tavern (channel)|TSBT]] to [[Broken Dagger (channel)|#Broken_Dagger]] would be a lasting one, she became a convenient replacement for [[D'arcy Jones]], who was prohibited from play on account of her anachronistic history. This was a significant force in the shaping of Ariane's personality: in order to be almost the <I>opposite</i> of D'arcy, Ariane required a personality that was rich in neither wit nor eloquence, one ruled by pragmatism rather than curiosity and whim; she would become, ultimately, a woman whose first love was order, rather than chaos.

==== The Sellsword ====

Ariane was born some twenty-odd years ago in the distant colony of [[Northern New Dauntless]]. Youngest child of mingled House Carnath-Emory, she grew early to adulthood, as is the way of things in this remote outpost. While she seldom details the events which transpired during her twelfth year there, this much is clear: that there was trouble enough that she felt the need to flee both House and home, and seek out her fortune elsewhere.

Years of wandering followed, during which she continued the fencing lessons she'd begun years ago, at the hands of her brother's tutor. A sellsword of gradually-growing repute, she found work in various companies (frequently posing as male) -- from a stint in [[The God-crushed War]], to service within the ill-fated group set to guard the Sorcerer's Guild in the distant city-state E'strielle. When the disaster befell them, the explosion of unshaped magical energies responsible worked a particularly strange effect upon young Ariane. The plate armour which was her uniform was liquified in an instant, and driven through the pores of her skin to flow with the very blood in her veins. Endowed with a sentience -- or perhaps only a <I>sensitivity</i> -- the armour rises in monofilaments from her skin at almost random periods, there to reform briefly into the platemail that it had originally been.

In the weeks which followed the disaster -- which had left a great, smoking crater in the heart of E'strielle -- the city's favour turned against magic and its derivatives. Being newly transformed into one of those herself, Ariane fled... nursing a newfound hatred for all things sorcerous.

==== The Tavern ====

The travels which followed eventually led her to [[Amasynia]] and the city [[Myrkentown]]. Some days after taking up residence at the [[Broken Dagger (Inn)|Broken Dagger]], she was fortunate enough to be employed by its then-proprietor, [[Raegan Darkblayde]], in the capacity of tavern bouncer. For years, she worked alongside [[Quincy Randall]], [[Tempestro Starr]], [[Jarek]], [[Lenore]] -- and even crotchety [[Pritchard]].

Everything changes, given enough time, and so was the case for Ariane. Over the years, she developed close friendships with her fellow bouncers, even taking [[Quincy Randall|Quincy]] for her beloved sister, regardless that there was no blood shared between them. At the capable hands of [[Johan Vornheim]], she began the slow process of learning to read what passes for [[Amasynia]]'s common tongue -- for such things were not taught to girl-children, in [[Northern New Dauntless|Northern Dauntless]]. [[Tempestro Starr|Starr]] taught her some mercy for magic-users, as did the sorceror [[Coran D'zir]], with whom she entered into a very odd bargain. In the company of these friends, she even journeyed to Kanpar Village, there to battle monstrous [[Zayken]].

For the first time in many years, Ariane new contentment -- which in turn bred ambition. Almost inevitably, that ambition led her to seek employment of a more particular sort: as personal guard to select members of [[Myrkentown]]'s own [[Judiciary Council]].

==== The Council ====

What had seemed like a straightforward sort of employment (particularly when compared to the outlandish horror that regularly plagued the [[Broken Dagger (Inn)|Broken Dagger]]) swiftly became something else altogether. It was to then-Governor [[Gad Phuri]] that she first presented herself as a guard -- and who became her first tutor in the dangers of politics, scandal and greed. The summer of 203 [[Anno Regalis|AR]], it seemed that more fear had descended on [[Myrken Wood]] than ever before. Between the attacks of The Baie, the defilement of the [[Myrken Graveyard]], the red sky, and countless other abnormalities that plagued Myrken Wood, the citizens of Myrken were frightened. They felt that [[Governor]] [[Gad Phuri|Gad Phuri]] and the [[Judiciary Council]] were doing nothing to protect them from these horrors. Their distaste led to the creation of a mob.

The mob marched toward the [[Governor's Mansion]], but was stopped by [[Thessilane Guard]], who created a line of shields to stop the advance. It was in this crush that The Baie appeared.

The creature rose from within the back of the crowd, growing in size until he was nearly three or four times the size of a man. Myrkenfolk have said that he seemed "to consume people with his body." He even used people like weapons, throwing and swinging men, women, and children at his enemies.

It was the gallant heroism of [[Altias Bromn]] and [[Alexander Kanashia]] that drove the creature back and causing it to flee, leaving death in its wake.

No one knows what the motive was behind the public attack, though many believed that it was due to provocation from the late [[Joseph O'Cynen]], whose name the beast called when it fled.

'''The Broken Dagger''' is an [[inn]] on the edge of [[Myrkentown]].

==Location==
Tucked behind a shield of forestry sits a welcoming two-story inn and tavern. Its originator, having planned for expansion, had claimed the property surrounding the site where he would build the most popular establishment in [[Myrken Wood]]. A quick ride up a narrow path from the town's common shops and buildings, The Broken Dagger stands as a welcoming retreat.

Having changed many hands since its beginning, the entire inn has fallen under neglect. Gone are some of the more memorable decorations from the tavern as many a bar room brawl has ruined them. The [[#Stable|house stables]] are left to the hands of passers by who offer work in exchange for a room and meal. The original [[#Garden|garden]], no longer suffers. Finer crops, rich in color and flavor, are being produced on premesis. Expert grounds keepers have turned the flimsy patch of soil into a garden that blooms the finest. A number of beautifully scaped, yet simple, planting areas are now part of the property.

The natural beauty of a [[Silver Lake|fresh water lake]] and stream grace the property of the inn, providing more than enough water for consumption and activity. Delicate grasses span meadows behind and beside the original tavern, which is surrounded by small clusters of fruiting trees. It is the perfect setting for creatures and humans alike.

==The Inn==
Stepping onto the porch, which is a small resting place for those who expect the arrival of others, you find great, oaken doors that are melded to this building by intricate iron hinges. Upon spreading one or both of these doors, you view the common room. Ale and spirits bring to life the forms within this hall--be they great or evil--and conversations buzz. It is an active place where the misfortunes of many, as well the prophecy of future, can be told.

Several round tables are fit with chairs to keep good company among people so that no one should *have* to sit alone. The ceiling is high, supported by a single beam at the room's center. [[Rafters]] branch from the main post like the many legs of a spider to make up the seating area high above, which attract our shy creatures.

Two hearths provide ample heat for the large room, one on the east wall, the other on the wall adjacent. Similar in construction, the stone-built fireplaces are without mantles. The fire in the pit on the western wall is ever in use as a place to heat kettles and pots as well as warm the audience that gathers around it. The other is only lit in times of serious weather when there is need for more heat than the working hearth provides.

There are no windows on either wall that keeps the sizeable hearths, but there are a few placed at the room's front by the grand doors that allow your entrance.

Straight ahead from the main entrance is the bar. The counter, made of teak, has seen many years of wear but is polished on a regular basis. The bar is just four and a half feet in height and is open on one end (your left). Several taller chairs are positioned against it, so that people may sit and have some idle chatter with the [[barkeep]] or keep to themselves. Behind the bar, there are counters and shelves filled with bottles in every variety and age, some full, some not so full.

At the bar's open end, right there on the wall behind it, there is a closed door that leads to a kitchen. The room is very cold as it is a stone enclosure. Most food is prepared here and then cooked outdoors or within the common room over the main fireplace. The kitchen staff belongs here and few others. There is a door to the grounds from this room; however, and some do sneak through here to go out or come in.

A stairway drops into the room from just past the eastern fireplace. There is ample distance from here to the bar, or in the opposite direction, to the awaiting tables where the patrons meet and trade secrets. Rooms actually kept in the 'house' or 'inn' are at the top of these stairs. This is the only entrance to the inn portion of The Broken Dagger without having to enter from the outside of the buildings.

==Construction==
The building remains in its original form, but some renovation has been done to make accommodations for guests. You are welcomed to explore the tavern at your leisure.

==Lodging ==
Eleven rooms are provided for the comfort of weary travelers in an addition that was built some years ago. The inn portion supplies all guest rooms and is accessible from the common room. Guests are provided with fresh water and towels, a single feather bed that is laid upon pallets to keep from the floor, a trunk for storage, and a sizeable mirror. Housekeeping is done twice each day (once in the morning, once in the evening) to supply fresh water and linens to occupants.

The tranquil surroundings are most accommodating and appear most hospitable. There is little necessary in order to register yourself as an occupant of the inn.

==Food and Drink ==
Each morning, a lodger is provided with a full breakfast is a courtesy. Additional meals can be made upon request at the bar, though the staffs requests that ample time be provided for the kitchen staff to do their work. The Broken Dagger has a consistent [[menu]] of items for you to consider. The staff tries to honor requests, provided they have the ingredients necessary.

==Stable==
To the left of the Dagger, and some 150 feet behind, lies the stable and pasture area. From the outside, the barn appears in excellent condition, made primarily of very large logs; it looks much like a log cabin. There are two large double doors, which open out and a barn loft door above them. Inside, the floor is a very smooth stone, well worn by horses' hooves. To the left of the entrance lies the hay pile, used mainly for the bedding of the stalls, and kept inside so that dampness and fungus doesn't begin to grow there.

To the right are large ale barrels that now hold only the best of grain and some higher quality hay. There is a small door, off to the right here, and once inside, one finds the room scattered with the necessary equipment used for riding. There are shelves and shelves of brushes, ointments, hoof picks, bits, and ropes on one wall. The other three walls are filled with saddles, blankets, bridles, and harnesses in many shapes and sizes. The barn contains six stalls on each side, making twelve altogether. To the back of the barn is another door that leads out towards the fenced in pasture area.

==Gardens==
There are a number of gardens kept on the property. A [[Pleasure Garden]] exists for guests who wish to stroll among boxwoods and cultivated wildflowers. The [[Kitchen Garden]] lives behind the main house, supplying the tavern cooks with needed herbs and vegetables. Larger plantings that require serious tending may be found within the [[Field Crops]], and finally [[The Orchard]] exists on the slope of a large hill leading high and away from The Broken Dagger. Small beds of flowers and pretty window boxes are also well-maintained by the [[:Category:BD_Employees|gardens staff]].
