The early summer sun was low in the west, causing the two riders’ shadows to stretch far before them. The distorted silhouettes reached the door of the inn long before the flesh and blood entered the yard. The foremost rider reined the horse up with the second rider quickly following suit.

Two young men came forward to take the horses as they approached the door of the stable. The captain handed over the reigns of Fleet to one of them, pressing a silver coin into the boy’s palm. “Take very good care of this horse, and there will be another silver in it for you.â€
