Poking at Dead Tailors with Very Long Sticks
For most people, a visit to the Remedium Edificium was NOT a welcome thing. It usually meant that you or a loved one had been grievously injured by Baies, cultists, cutthroat thieves, falling into ditches, anything really (Bloody Flux included). However, there was a lovely, putrid smelling section of the Remedium which no one at all wanted to be in, ever, least of all the two Constables there now. "Why are we doing this, Kurt? We all but know she did it." Young Charles McCoy seemed a little green as he VERY carefully looked over the dead body of Suede Roschen.
For once, Detective Constable Kurt Lentham did NOT seem very comfortable, not even in his own skin. He had no love for this place, and for very good reason indeed. "We're here, son, because one now-quite-dead looter and one just-barely-alive staff member here both got poisoned pretty bad when trying to examine the body. That tells me there's something else going on. At least, it's worth looking into." One of the first things they had found hidden in the tailor's clothes, right AFTER finding the trashy romance novel, of course, were the hidden needles, tipped with something incredibly unpleasant.
"Yeah, but why do I have to do it." McCoy all but whined. This was the WORST.
A snort from Lentham from the chair he had dragged in. He didn't look up from the romance novel, which he had begun about ten minutes before. It was good to have an underling. "You want to go find the Drow for questioning instead?" Jirai was almost certainly the culprit. Witnesses had seen someone matching her quite unique description leaving the Dagger at almost exactly the right time for the murder. It was NOT a meeting anyone would look forward to.
"Hell no! I... hey! What's this, Kurt?" The younger constable had been digging around the man's clothes in the grumpiest way possible, half expecting to poison himself at each turn, but now he had seemingly hit the jackpot. From a hidden compartment in the man's shirt, he had pulled out a small pouch.
Lentham finally looked up from the novel. "Yeah? Toss it over." If it was a trap, then he'd rather spring it than McCoy. The younger man had been facing all the danger today.
"You sure?" Half a skeptical look to the Detective Constable and then a nod as he clumsily tossed the pouch. "Oh, OK."
Lentham caught it easily enough, having put the novel down in preparation. He unlaced the string holding it shut and a dozen small gems, sparkling far more than they might naturally, fell into his hand. "...the hell?"
He poured all but one back into the pouch and gripped it carefully, certainly wary for another trick. He held it up to the poor excuse they had for light. He turned it around in his hand and finally, he placed one finger on either edge, on either facet.
As he did, a voice seemed to emanate from it, a female voice, one detailing a premeditated MURDER of all things. "Kurt, is that...?" Now, McCoy had never heard this particular Drow's voice, but it didn't take too much effort to figure out just who this was.
Lentham, for his part was shaking his head, even as the voice continued to flow through the room. It seemed like it was recorded from a conversation as there were spaces where another person ought to have been speaking, yet there was only one voice stored on the jewel. "Sounds it, son. Sounds it. And I bet all of these little sparklies have conversations just like this one. I wouldn't ever want to be Miss Jirai, but I most certainly wouldn't want to be her right now. Let's go see if such pretty gemstones are The High Constable's style." Still shaking his head, he put his flask up to his lips for a nice, long toast.
