Last eve, a dark shape was seen atop the meetinghouse, by a handful of passerbys. When a handful of those good citizens (those who had been out for a good reason, at least) alerted the town guard, they rushed to the scene, no doubt aided in their haste by the sounds within, as though a beast had set to destroying the room. Upon entering, they saw a dark shape slip back out the window, disappearing into the night, almot into thin air, according to outside witnesses, who would swear all they saw was a flock of black birds spread into the night.

The shutters blocking the window to Councilor Treadwell's office had been wrenched from their hinges, and thrown the street below, obviously the point of entry for the prowler. The inside of the room was a shambles, torn completely to pieces. Strongboxes smashed, records torn apart and tossed all about the room, even the desk itself splintered into pieces. It will take weeks to try and figure out what was taken and what was just destroyed, but there is one thing missing, at least.

All of the taxes that had been collected and not spent were gone. The entire box, heavy as it may be, has gone missing, along with the large ledger that sat atop it.

As of yet, no cuplrit has been indicated, though we can assume the guard will be on its toes now.
