Disco Inferno, Burn Baby Burn!

Sun Jul 20, 2003 3:32 am

A very long, very annoying, very stressful day. That was just what Suede hadn't been looking for. If that truly hadn't been enough, not it seems someone was bringing in supplies to disrupt the market business, and he had a fairly good idea who. Suede couldn't have that though, now could he? Of course not, for if he did, then he'd never hear the end of it.

He hadn't planned to cause any mischief for a few days at least, but this had changed everything. At current the tailor was upon a room in the town square, masked within the shadows of a neighboring building. Once again the tailor's clothing had taken on a midnight hue, not perfect black... that actually tended to stand out more then an off color. Cloak fluttered in a slight breeze, forming him to tuch the scarf tighter around his face and pull the cowl closer over eyes again. No one would be able to recognize him, and this was good.

Eyes peered over the edge of 'his' roof, taking in the scene below. One building to his right several members of the order where standing guard... rather poorly with their idle chatter and one passed out against the wall. In that building rested the recent arrival of wagonloads from 'Miss Alexi Rose' as it were.

It was almost time and his eyes moved to the sky, gauging the location of that moon. It was beginning to wane, good, soon they wouldn't have to deal with Biske's little problem. But for now, other issues. From where he sat Suede could see both of the gates to the town off in either distance. He had sent Canthag and another out, one to each.

Ah, a flash... just a glint of light off a dagger, good one was in place. Head and cowl shifted the other way to watch for the second sign. This one took longer, two minutes maybe, then it was there. A small smile formed on pursed lips, hidden from the world by cloth. It was time to light up the night.

It was up to the tailor to give the signal, and oh what a signal it was. There, a window in the supply building, perfect for what he need. The tailor sunk low to his roof, climbing as close to his target as he could without drawing attention by sound or movement. Being seen would just make this harder. Hands disappeared into the folds of his cloak, bringing out two small red crystals and a fist sized rock on their return.

Body raised and all three disappeared into one hand, flick of the wrist and swing of the arm, all three objects went sailing towards the target window. A resounding crash as they slammed through inside... then a moment silence before a flash of light expressed with popping sounds not unlike those of fireworks. Ah those crystals were enchanted, exploding on their touchdown. Nothing like great balls of fire, goodness gracious no. Instead a splatter of flames across the supply room, igniting half the building's holdings. Suede would hold that throwing pose just a moment, almost in a stance akin to Saturday Night Fever.

Guards would turn, attention drawn by the explosion and light, giving the shadow time to disappear back over his room and scale his way down into an alley. He was off running, disappearing through a door, out another or a window. A winding mixmatched path towards the Gaol. By now each of the pavilions had suffered a similar flaming assault, and the games of his second companion would begin. She better behave.

The Gaol was reached the tailor made a running pass, tossing a rock with a small note upon it towards the guards there. The guards would no doubt be angry, but he had no time to stay and chat. Again he was gone, and minutes later would disappear into a building and down to a basement for the night. He'd find Canthag already there, tapping feet to a mystery tune. They waved and the tailor settled down on a barrel to wait for their last companion.

The note of course, would be simple, folded in half, and addressed to Lt. Kilborn.

"Just taking care of business, nothing personal.

-Market"

What? No love, odd. The fires themselves would obviously burn until either fed their fill or exstinguished. They weren't meant to destroy, but make a point. It would be up to the guards to deal with them, control them, whatever they deemed proper.

Father Justin wiped his soot streaked face and
leaned against a wall. Townsfolk had come to help
fight the fire, but more than half of the food
that had been held in reserve was destroyed.

"Who would do such an evil thing?"

"Who indeed?" A man held out a waterskin in his
gloved hand to the tired cleric."Perhaps it might
be safer to keep the next shipments safely stored
in the churches and Priory? Surely even the most
greedy of brigands would hesitate to attack them
there? Perhaps a word to the Inquistor about this
shameful affair might be in order? I'm sure he'd
find it a fitting topic for a sermon, perhaps even
investigation,don't you?"

"Yes! Yes, I most certainly think so! Thank you
my son! I will see to it immediately!" He handed
the waterskin back to the man and set out for the
town gates.

"Pax vobiscum,Father!" The helpful Dhugal waved
to the priest and then went off to find some of his
"helpers"

The the surprise of the church and perhaps others about, two good citizens of Myrken Wood had taken to heart of the news. The burning of food for the poor was wrong. Both Suede and Aeri saw to it that a shipment of new supplies were sent right to the church. Aeri had overheard of the news from Dhugal and took his words to heart.

" I hae "suggested" th' relief supplies be taken straight t' th' Priory an' th' churches t' be distributed."

Wise words from a wise man indeed. The shipment was sent promptly with the surprise of the church members with a promise of another soon. Suede would work harder to meet the demands and ensure the good folk of Myrken Wood shall get what they deserve.

Jirai worked her way closer to the gates, a silent shadow ghosting cautiously along the streets. Her ebony skinned face was calm, devoid of the sadistic glee some people might have expected to see. Not that it mattered, since no one was about. Hand slipped into a pouch as the dark elf came to her assigned gate, drawing out a few odd crystals. These were rolled about in a gloved palm for a moment as she considered the view in front of her. Then her wrist flicked, sending the crystals flying to burst into flame - the signal for the tailor. She had spun away the moment the crystals were released, putting her back to the flare of bright light, eyes narrowed as she darted back through the streets, her hooded, cloaked form sliding easily through the shadows.

On to other pursuits, now, before she rejoined the others. Or, rather, such was expected of her. But the dark elf's changing moods were well enough known, and, for one reason or another, Jirai did nothing more that night, save to make her way back to a certain building, descending to the basement with little more than a nod for her two companions.

A game, was what began to develop that drew more and more individuals into the web. In this scenario, it was pitting friend against friend, and friend against adversary. In the end, there wouldn't be any winners. Of that, the certainty was already established.

The common phrases included an eye for an eye. Blood for blood. In this case, it was a shipment for a shipment.

It wasn't precisely difficult to sort out the more recent shipments. For the most part, they were still either en route, or being unloaded at this particular moment. Which suited the cowled figure just handily.

He accepted one of the sacks of flour, and proceeded to move within the sanctuary with the load. Muttering faintly underneath his breath as he did so. Nothing overly discernable of course, though when the sack of flour was flopped down on the ground next to the others that had been brought in, he stooped down along with it.

It was quick work, for one of deft fingers, to undo the very corner of the sack, and slip a few round, whitish objects within. A few others likewise discreetly tampered with. Overall, the effort was subtle, and unseen by observation. Straightening up, he turned to move back out and join the train of workers once more, bringing back another load for the storage room.

By the time he was done of course, the first egg would be hatching, and the maggot worming its way down into the produce, along with its siblings.

By the time Suede and Aeri's food would be set for public consumption, it would by and large all be rotten, and infested.

Not, ultimately, the grand gesture they had perhaps intended.

The man that'd been considering a different approach however, felt appropriately satisfied. It was merely finding the right lad to bring word to a certain other individual to ensure that too many problems weren't caused by unobservant individuals.

Lieutenant Kilborn was more than mildly displeased by the time morning had rolled around. With the destruction of the foodstores, if the Horde did decide to, or managed to lay siege to the town, they wouldn't last a week. The supply lines from the neighbouring countries weren't overly beneficial either. Dauntless still suffered from its own drought, and with the number of soldiers and the awful weather they were currently experiencing, their own harvest would be barely enough to feed them through the winter. Let alone an army if they remained camped out there.

Until this point, the Market hadn't been something he was overly concerned with. A couple of nights in the gaol, a half dozen lashes, maybe. The taunting was an irritant, but it wasn't a particular concern.

Until this point, the Market, hadn't assaulted anyone to his knowledge, nor committed arson. They still hadn't assaulted anyone. There'd been mercifully, enough time for the two guards inside the store house to make their exit. The Council, would determine if the act of burning the food stores amounted to treachery of course. He wouldn't go that far himself, but the ringleaders of this little escapade weren't going to be permitted to run off virtually unscathed. He was a member of the Order of Straka. It was nothing personal. Just business.

The beads of the front doorway were shifted to the side, and he stooped quietly, as he slipped within the incense filled household. The pungent smells causing him to wrinkle his nose, while he grew more accustom to them. The soft chitter of some animal distracted him for a second, and he spent a brief period of time looking for the source. Starting somewhat, when the cape over the glass cage was removed to reveal the serpentine body, with the head of a small monkey. It chittered at him angrily, it seemed, and he hastily dropped the covering once more.

"Madame Romanova?" He questioned, backing away and into another wall. One that didn't feel quite solid to him. What was behind this curtain however, he decided not to investigate. Instead he edged forward along the passage instead.

"Here"

A sharp glance to the side, and a hand down to his sabre for a half second. Startled, as he had been fairly certain a moment ago, that the wall on his right had been exactly that. A wall. Now there was a small antechamber present, from which the thick scents tumbled forth. And a woman with graying hair, and a withered body sitting upright, with emerald green eyes focused directly upon the crouching Lieutenant.

"Sit. You've come to the Seeress for assistance once again Joshua. It has been some time." She stated, edging forth with the faint chime of metal ringing against metal. Various bracelets and earrings ringing out against one another, and at least the glint of reflected light alongside her nose. She had more piercings than last time, he was certain.

"Aye. I have an elusive man I seek. One who claims to be a market. I have brought something he left me."

"Place them here." She gestured to a clear spot on the table before her, inviting the Lieutenant to slip into the cramped room, and take a seat upon the cushion opposite of her. Once he was seated, he drew out the two rocks, and the notes that'd been written upon each, inclusive of the string, presumably, that'd been used to tie them, and set them within her reach.

"Mmmm." She offered, reaching forward to pick each one up and offer a smile towards Joshua. "They do carry a sense of him yet. One is old and faint. The other is fresh. Merely hours ago you received it."

"Aye, Seeress."

"Let's see what they have to say about the man you seek."

The benefit of working in the situation Suede was found in, was that one tended to always watch both their back as well as their interests. This was no exception, especially since the supplies were meant to save face, and if nothing else to replace the ones lost. He had wanted to make a point, no need to cause anyone to suffer.

As such, Canthag had been overseeing the transfer of that food , and one the cart had been finished and the workers gone, he made his rounds. Rotten fruits removed, rancid water disposed of. Normally no one would catch such a thing as maggot infestions, granted. But Canthag was despite his youthful look, well aged for a human, and with many years of training within the arts of a druid. Life was something he could feel, and indeed the maggots were within range of this 6th sense.

Sacks were found, and all the threats of further spread were removed. Fortunately only a quarter of what was delivered suffered the infestation, but still it was going to force some suffering unpon the people of Myrken. Whoever did it was far lower then the person they had a grudge against.

The Seeress reached out for one of the stones... the newer one no less. It seemed to her the presence upon the first was far to faded to allude to much about the man whom it came from. Hands drew back towards her form, with lithe fingers exploring the surface... delving into the aura wafting and waning from the rock.

Her eyes would slide to halflids, and she'd consider a long momemt before speaking to Kilborn.

"This man, he's new to the town, a rather recent addition in fact. There's quite a bit of malice on this newer stone compared to the first, as to what I'm unsure, but it seemed he used recent events as a release."

"Mmmm... he's not the greedy, uncaring sort I'd expect you to be after. I'm unsure his motives for it, but whatever he does, it seems he's much more forced into it then others would believe. Manipulated perhaps. He's not dark or brooding, though his natural appearance could pass as such. Rather flamboyant and with a passion for the female sex it would seem."

Nothing more could she find on the stone... it wasn't a personal enough effect it would seem. The item would be placed upon the table once more, and she'd open her eyes to meet Kilborn's gaze once again.

Brother Thebbidus scowled most angrily. Not only was he not notified of the alms delivered earlier the day before, but now they had already been destroyed, and now a NEW shipment had arrived! And he was notified of none of it! He could have spat he was so furious. There was a proper way of doing things...and in this case, they weren't being done properly! There wasn't any wonder such harm befell the goods! And with money so strained of late in the pockets of the common and noble alike, the Church could not afford such folly!

The Church's Head Almoner to Myrkentown rode as quickly as his weathered mare would take him, which was not very fast. He had left the Priory as soon as Brother Cletus had arrived to tell him of the news--both of the shipments' arrivals and the burning of the first.

When he came upon the scene, the older monk dismounted the horse and moved toward the burnt storehouse, bushy brows knit with anger. There were still many gathered, though the fire had been contained by morning. The building was all but destroyed; it was merely a smoldering husk of stone walls. Luckily, none of the other buildings aside it were set aflame by the arsonist's terror. Thebbidus ran a hand over his bald head as he shook it. What could he do really? It was too late. The goods should have been stored in the Church's cellars. They would have been safe there. Someone needed to be told. But first there was the new shipment to deal with...and as Head Almoner, it was his job to see to it.

With the mare's reins in hand, he walked to the Chapel of St. Oran. A single wagon remained and appeared to be 3/4 unloaded. Why it had been left with a quarter of its goods still on the wagon, he could not fathom. And where were the men who were unloading it? Was there a total failure of communication and proper protocol?! He would need to speak with the prior about this total disregard of his position. Thebbidus tied off the horse to a tree and walked down the three steps to the door of the cellar. The door was unlocked. What in the name of the saints was going on?! He pushed the door open and looked upon Canthag. "You there! What do you think you're doing?! You have no business in here!"

Sun Jul 20, 2003 11:24 pm

Canthag had been leaning against his staff not far from the entrance to the cellar. The sound of the door being drawn open had failed to draw his attention, but the mention of his name had not.

Wooden weapon was kicked out by one foot to twist and land upon his shoulder as the elf spun around on heels, coming face to face with Thebbidus. One corner of his lips pulled back in considering the man, he appeared of the clergy, and quite clearly confused. A soft sigh and the staff began to drum against his shoulder.

"Me? I'm Canthag Anvalus, at your service. And, actually, I do have some business here, y'see my friend just recently provided some goods for the church here, and he asked me to check over the delivery and make sure the food was fresh." A sniff. "Finished my job, so I was just admiring the workmanship down here."

The elf flashed a grin at the man, and prepared to turn back away from the man, not expecting any form of argument on the topic.

Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:31 am

Brother Thebbidus blinked. Had he lost his mind? Was he dreaming? Surely none of this was happening.

"You have no business here! No one is allowed in here without permission of the cellarer or myself and supervision of a clergyman! And how did you get into this door? How am I to know you are not a thief? Where is the inventory of the shipment? You say that you are finished and yet there are still goods on the cart up there. Explain yourself!"

Thebbidus crossed his arms, looking stern...a well-practiced expression that he used frequently when dealing with novices who got out of line.

Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:42 am

A loud groan of frustration as Canthag just gave the man a rather dry look. A long breath and free hand made a pushing motion towards the ground as the elf controlled his temper. Fingers would then move up to tick off each point.

"I have business here, checking this order. The cellarer let me in. Your clergyman shouldn't have left the room. Someone opened it for me. Why would I be here of all places if I was a theif, I'm a druid thank you. The goods in the cart were found infested with maggots, the merchants in town apparently didn't check their own goods."

Well.. he didn't think that was the case, he would have found them sooner, but that was a matter for a different day. And then he'd reach into his vest and practically fling the supply listings at the man. "And THERE is the inventory."

Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:58 am

"Well...well..."

Thebbidus's stammering was interrupted by the flung inventory. He caught the document with his chest and clutched both hands over it to keep it from falling. He smoothed the parchment as best he could and looked upon it for a moment.

"Well...I should have been notified! And no one should be down here without supervision!"

He nodded, coupling it with a grunt; feeling satisfied that at least -someone- has been reprimanded for the failed communication regarding these shipments.

"Now...what is still on the cart? I will need to note what has been kept on the cart and not delivered...as well as receive your mark."

Thebbidus was still the Almoner, and by the good Father he would do his job. As such, he looked at Canthag expectantly.

Mon Jul 21, 2003 6:23 am

Was still staring rather blandly. He hated people who thought their position made them truly special, and this was definitely whom the man was playing out to be for now. Lipped puckered out a bit as he sucked on one tooth, a high pitched squeek coming from it. Eyes were scanning over the room's contents while he did so, and after a moment he turned back towards the man.

"A bushel of apples and four sacks of flour, everything else was fine. And which mark did you want exactly?"

Mon Jul 21, 2003 7:02 am

"Your name will do. I will write it upon the ledger when I mark the inventory. What was your name again?"

Thebbidus moved aside the door, no longer blocking it; in preparation of allowing Canthag to take his leave. Though he was not so far, nor so good as to allow the man to leave without his name again. Of course, Thebbidus could do little other than stand in the man's way, but certainly the man wouldn't raise his hand against a man of the cloth. In fact, the idea of such didn't even enter Thebbidus's mind.
