Musing Over a Dolphin

Tue May 17, 2005 11:23 am

Coran held Ariane's pendant by its silver chain with two fingers, spinning it back and forth, again and again, his mind boiling over with questions that had no immediate answers -- and if today had been any sort of indication, there would not be any answers provided in near future.

Sitting on the edge of his room's bed, Coran studied the silver creature the pendant resembled -- a dolphin, he knew; he'd learned it from some book in the town library, or some town's library; that latter part wasn't so clear -- as if it could provide answers after enough examination. Alas, it was but an argentine dolphin; it told him nothing now, and would offer nothing in the future. That frustrated him, but he knew the feeling was irrational and ultimately useless. That, too, frustrated him, but dwelling, pondering, thinking on what was happening in lieu of acting upon and reacting to what was happening would get him nowhere, would produce no results except more unanswered questions and more frustration.

The question dominating his mind now, that burned brighter and hotter than any of the others, was this: Should I become involved?

And: If I did, what could I do?

And then: If I didn't ... what would -- no, will -- happen?

The dolphin couldn't answer those questions, either.
