what does it mean?

When I was a small boy, my people showed to me that in order to show that you loved someone you had to hurt them. By that standard they hated my younger brother yet loved me nearly to death, and often. They loved everyone else in the village except my brother.
But what does it truly mean to care or love something or someone? By all standards it means putting them first in all things before yourself right? It means the exact opposite of betrayal and scorn.
That leads me to believe that as hundreds died by my hands in countless wars fought throughout the centuries, I loved and cared for those who I fought with and for. By the standard that seemingly all races hold to in this...I was a very affectionate warrior. Is this true?
I held stubbornly to the belief that as long as it was 'in the name of', or 'for the good of', that all I did was to show just how much I loved and supported my country. No matter what evil I brought upon mine enemies that it was for 'the love of' that was done. I never cared about the cost so long as those around me and those behind me were safe.
Upon my latest arrival to the lands of Myrkenwood I held to those ideals with solidarity and conviction. I was what I was and stone the crows I was a bastard because I cared. Did I care who was offended? Still don't but that's not the point.
The point is, even though I would still hold true to my words and do everything in my power to destroy them if they attack me again...Mekarie and Catch showed part of what it means when they protected each other. Though one tried to murder me and the other hit me with a stick, they showed a part of what it means to care and to love. They have my respect in those regards.
But what does it truly mean? That is an answer far beyond simple words. It can, however, be shown.
Case and point, Sascha showed compassion
to a bastard who was rightfully stabbed by someone who was being murdered by said bastard...regardless of if it was a cut purse who had killed before. She removed the dagger regardless of why or how it happened. Then she gave this bastard a task and a job.
She runs an orphanage to help those less fortunate though she herself has had a rough go of things. Her outlook is true and her heart is pure. She makes it her goal to do no harm...that showed me the fallacy of my existence.
With caring and compassion alone she has turned anger or fear into love and respect. Focused hands bent on destruction towards construction...lives of torment into happiness. Dreams that were nightmares were turned to hope.
Mr. Treadwell has shown great generosity towards my dear friend Desoph. As have N`vek and that scaly bastard Scorch. Proof that love and caring come not from pain.
It swells my heart to be near such great people as these. An honor to hopefully call those men noted above friend someday. It gives me a sense of hope and wonder to see the generosity of Treadwell, and the beauty of Sascha's work.
They both have set a high standard that I hope to reach someday...but I doubt I can.
If you reach for the stars...you may fail to touch them, but you may happen upon a low hanging apple and get a good stretch out of it...right?
I won't be able to completely remove the monster I have become, but I will try to restrain it. I have seen the fruits of my labors turn to dust and the family I thought loved me turn away. Maybe my life has been a sick joke or maybe it is due punishment for my sins.
Regardless, it is my fondest wish to continue to learn to love as you all do. I hope someday to be worthy of Sascha's regard, Desoph's brotherly affection, and friendship of those around me. I hope to some day be part of the bigger family that is Myrkenwood, and to not be met with distrust, distaste, dread, or scorn.
Maybe someday I will be like that...but it takes time and maybe I will fail...but atleast I can say I tried. It's what my late daughter would've wanted...what Sascha would like for me, so I won't have to worry her...and it's what I want...to be more than a blade.
Thank you all for showing me what a waste my life has been...maybe my wealth, skills, and talents can help the community. Maybe my knowledge can aid you in your troubles. Maybe the forge and school I will be requesting permission to build can help as well.
P.s. Scorch...your still an asshole...keep up the good work.
