A Well Earned Reward

A Well Earned Reward

Winter had come early to Myrken Wood. Snow fell quite frequently this year, even though the season had just begun. Thankfully, it was not yet sticking, which should have made it all seem more magical than annoying. Still, Glenn Burnie was finding it quite the annoyance as he wiped his eyes while he and his companion walked silently through the streets, past the wall, and towards the Remedium. Very little seemed magical anymore, but that was fine. The de facto administrator of the province didn't like magic one bit.

He did, however, like humanity, and he liked great feats of daring and ingenuity; they had even managed one of those not long ago. Now it was time for the prime participant in that experiment to reap the benefits of his involvement, relatively meager as they may be. The two men walked up the steps of the Remedium, with Burnie greeted with familiarity if not warmth. He was a frequent occupant after all. "Well then, Tennant," he would begin as he practically burst through the door of the man's room. "I hope you're fully recovered. We thought about giving you some sort of medal for a time, but really, that would be rather poor form, don't you think? Instead, we'll stick to the letter of our agreement and so long as you capture this malleable malefactor, well, then you can have one, along with your freedom. I think, oh, two months is plenty of time, given the season and the fact the trail might have grown cold, and as I said," Burnie spoke on, his nearly legendary lung power being put to full use. "we've found a highly capable Constable to aid you in your task," and, of course to act as his parole officer and keep close tabs on him.

"So then," and Burnie would nod to the man beside him, "Tennant... Tolleson is it?" In this society surnames truly had little meaning. There likely wasn't another Tennant currently in Myrkentown after all. It was a bit of an odd name. Burnie would, however, assume that he shared his name with Genny. "meet.. Corporal Seasons," and yes, when the word "corporal" was spoken it was with just a bit of distaste. The man insisted and there seemed little harm in it, but it still grated just a little, and Burnie might get to the bottom of the title or name, or whatever it was, if he ever got around to it. Unfortunately for his curiosity, the Constable's secrets were quite far down the list. "I hope you'll get along smashingly and we can bring this affair to a swift and satisfactory conclusion."

Tennant

If only he'd known is biggest admirer had planned on barging into his, thankfully, private room at the Remedium. But alas, Tennant is caught rather unaware; scarred a bit, healed and well enough thanks to Rhaena but with a frightful mess of bedhead all the same. He is a half shaved picture of health as he stands over the room's wash basin with a small mirror and luscious lather over his whiskers. Upon the entrance of his company he grins in good spirit, knowing better than to interject mid Glenn's verbal deluge. To the question of his name, he nods, distracted as he finishes the shave. If only Burnie had met all the other Tolleson siblings, six in total and all with equally charming names and ridiculous red hair.

"Two months, amidst your charming Blight and winter muck." He spoke doubtfully with a shrug, questioning the time allotted in his inflection rather than outright. As if to suggest that was hardly enough time, even if the trail had been fresh.

"Corporal," a grin is offered to Seasons; and Tennant was the one with an odd name! Giving pause he rinsed the suds and toweled off to face the intruders properly. "I'm certain we'll be fast friends, like peas in a pod, thick as thieves," his grin grew wider as he addressed them both with the verbal jab and a literal slap of a pat to Season's shoulder. Of course this was likely far less funny to the men who would have him locked up. "A metal, I'm honored," he changed topics quickly and backed away in case Seasons was less appreciative of their new-found friendship. "Though you can keep it if it affords me a bed, perhaps a good fire, a room without bars?" Playing it off as just a suggestion his smile remained, almost joking, regarding Glenn; the man who had both nearly killed him and saved his life. If anyone could, surely it was he, who would decide what sort of accommodations the accused thief would have during the next few months.

The constable that followed Glenn into the Remedium was an older man, with streaks of grey running through the sides of his hair and a face weathered by time outside in the sun. He wore the usual garb of the constabulary, though his was well weathered, slightly too large, and wasn't particularly well kept. He hadn't bothered to tuck anything in, and combined with the fact he was two days late on a shave he appeared decidedly scruffy. His helmet was currently nowhere obvious, but a sword and dagger hung from his loose belt, only held up by the baldric over one shoulder.

He stood in the frame of Tennant's door, arms crossed before him and a shoulder set against a wall as Glenn went on in that way he tended to do. The man was absently chewing on the end of an unlit cigar as the pair talked, brown showing utter disinterest in the conversation. When his name finally came up he pushed off the wall and stepped forward with a glance for Glenn. It would be worth noting that no one has confessed to promoting, or knows of Seasons being promoted to Corporal. Was that even a rank amongst the constables?

After the thief removed his hand Seasons would wipe absently at his shoulder and sighed. He got the worst jobs. "I don't like peas, and you're not going to like the winter. Especially in a room without bars on the windows. Things will get in."
"So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."

Burnie smiled, first at Tennant's cheek and then at Seasons' reaction. There was a reason why the man got all the worst jobs after all. He brought it upon himself, really. In some ways, they were meant for each other. "Obviously, if there is progress, that two month estimate will be adjusted accordingly. It's all up to the good Constable's oversight now, including the sort of lodging he feels comfortable with you having, so I do suggest you cooperate with him fully. I'll have your sister informed of this new arrangement, but any meeting between the two of you will happen solely if she wishes it."

That seemed to be about it, then. Burnie looked between the two. "Well, best of luck. Keep me appraised on the situation, if you would....Corporal." Again with the slight distaste. "And you know how it goes with 'shapeshifters.' Trust no one that doesn't know the proper codewords and all that." It wasn't quite a joke but it was bordering on being one. If not for Tennant's brave dive to the bottom of the lake, he wouldn't be getting this chance, after all.
