An Evening at the Meeting House

The chill wind nipped at the curtains of his room at the Broken Dagger. The night air was just what he needed after the long meeting earlier. There were times when he thought Gad'Phuri would burst into flames he looked so warm. Though there had been little chance of that, truly, considering the amount of perspiration the little cow produced.

Truth be told, it had gone as he had expected. It was a typical meeting run by typical full-of-themselves men. He was grateful that they had, for the most part, stayed true to the agenda. The meeting had still run long, with even the Governor looking as if he had a hundred places he would rather be, but the three main reasons for gathering had been covered, and Altias had learned a great deal over the course of the night.

Most curious, to him, had been the discussion of the Captain of the Guard. All had seemed to have something to bring to the table on that subject. For the most part they had been in agreement, and he believed they had reached some sort of solution.

It was official, he was now a Councilor. What was the official title they had given him? Oh yes, Councilor of Administrative Sanctions. Such an important sounding title. Altias Bromn, Councilor of Administrative Sanctions. He had no doubt that it was a fancy way of letting him do some dirty work that the fat man didn't want on his hands. Oh well, it would work to his own advantage as well.

Turning from the window, but leaving it open, the fresh air was one of his small comforts, he unbraided the long lengths of deep red. Nanny had always said his hair held all the brilliance of the sunset, and should he ever cut it, that beautiful light would be that much dimmer. such a strange woman she was. Still, Altias had taken the words to heart, and never did a blade touch his locks.

Special care was taken as he brushed his hair, watching his own expression in the cloudy mirror. His thoughts drifting to Lord Guillaume. What a strong creature he was. Silent, almost brooding, unless his views were not matched. Then his words had been simple and direct. Altias admired that. Perhaps he would find time to join Altias for dinner some evening.

Ah well, enough of such thoughts. Quickly, with a skill taken up of many years, Altias rebraided his hair before stripping down to his natural state and slipping between the covers of the hard little bed. There would be time to understand all that had happened this evening after a good night's sleep.

The meeting of the Myrken Wood Judiciary Council was rather boring in the absence of riff raff . The governor was a fan of public cheer and derision at his statements. He anticipated such comfort for the next time. If news of their next meeting's agenda could be spread through the main village, there would be a reasonable showing.

Topics were of minimal business according to the governor. It was all he could do to remain seated and attempt to stay focused. There were exhilarating circumstances to take his mind away from the ramblings of Councilors O'Cynen and Avarante. Giscard's brother turned out to be less of a nuisance than was originally figured.

While he meant to finish business at a reasonable hour, Gad was hampered by the considerations of his staff. The talks quickened past the midnight hour, much to the large man's diffidence.

When all was finally approved, and the new Councilor of Administrative Sanctions was declared, the governor himself left in haste with a mention of a promising weekend excursion that he felt hastened to prepare for.

An Untimely Interruption

Joseph O'Cynen sat at the table with the other councilors and the governor, listening intently to Tetsi Avarante's proposition about alcohol. It interested him so because he grew many of the ingredients to make Myrken Wood's wines and ales. It seemed like it was going to end on the premises that there would be an experiment to see if the proposal would turn out profit. Unfortunately, Joseph never got to hear the end of it.

A young woman hastily barged into the room, and seeing that someone was in the middle of conversation, promptly quieted her movements. She moved briskly around to Joseph, having had caught his eye the moment she entered the room. Pretty simple: she was his daughter. She bent down, whispering something in Joseph's ear; a flicker of surprise passed over him. He stood, offering a slight bow which was somewhat unlike him; he generally didn't bother with formalities, but in such cases - in the middle of a Judiciary Council meeting, for one - Joseph would at least offer as much. This, and a short explanation that didn't explain anything:
"Excuse me, but my daughter here just informed me of an emergency on one of the fields. I'm sorry, but I'm going to see to it immediately."

And with that, he left, his daughter in tow.
