Gentlemen, we are faced with threats that we can clearly no longer ignore. I need not detail the events of the previous evening; they are already the stuff of gossip on the town streets. Rather, it is my wish that we assemble for a star chamber meeting at the nearest available opportunity: doors will be closed to the general public; the Order of Straka will not (with the exceptions of Captain Daniels and Lieutenant Kilborn) be present within fifty paces of the Meetinghouse; security will be entrusted to the Myrken Militia, under guidance of 'Cy' Proxenus. What we must speak of is not fit for the ears of the town, and I will brook no further interruptions of the sort that we suffered this very evening. Each Councilor will be permitted a single guard, and not a body more, lest this madness come upon our persons a second time.

This is a grave matter indeed; Myrken Wood's very security hangs in the balance. I wish explanations.

Unto Councillors Guillaume, Roschen, al'Nerun, Treadwell, Captain Daniels, Lieutenant Kilborn and Governor Bromn, Ave!

It is my proposal that the meeting be held at a different venue than the meetinghouse; any attempts at secrecy are undermined by the knowledge that the council does assemble. We must assume that we are undermined by fifth column elements of the enemy who are keeping our principal foes appraised of our movements; this particular observation is further reinforced by the fact that we have confirmed that some of the so-called 'koltists' are indeed townsfolk.

My best guess is that further attacks may well be planned in advance of further meetings, and that until some sort of resolution has been brought to the matter of enemy informants, we cannot rule out the possibility of further, perhaps better armed attacks.

As you know, the militia's function is not primarily one of defending the high personages of this land, that is Straka's function, and so this duty, appended to others the militia is carrying out, has created more resource strain upon us. We can set up security, but there are also refugee operations we have been undertaking for several days now that are a drain on our resources.

My best suggestion for security, therefore, is secrecy, rather than large movements that are easily observable by the enemy's scouts, at least until the presence of the enemy has been effectively blinded and deafened. Furthermore, I will arrange for security through private methods and picked men.

The location I have in mind is the Casticos barn, which is the possession of a horse farmer that has left with his livestock for better pasturage and is therefore currently abandoned. It is also large enough to allow for a meeting of the council and other notables, and sits in the middle of what is, currently, barren land; given the right conditions, observation of approaching foes should be no particular problem.

Your honors may well balk at holding a meeting admist road apples, and yet I can think of no more unexpected place to hold such a meeting. I suggest that the councillors don traveller's garb and dispense with livery and carriages, and instead get fast horses, once again because secrecy is now our best hope for security.

Proxenus One-Eye

Proxenus, per his typical method of doing things, forced his aide, a young man of fairly good breeding from a richer family in the area, to copy that scroll several times. He waited impatiently for the drudgery to finish and then took the scrolls on horseback, despite the discomfort of his piles, to deliver them personally; he wasn't taking chances on this missive being intercepted.

The Lieutenant eyed the letter for a few moments and frowned ever so faintly at a few of the statements made within it. He had not been interested in attending Altias Bromn's witch hunt, and therefore had found more important things to do with his evening. That hadn't been too difficult in his opinion. Cutting his toenails could've been more important, in his opinion. Not, that this was what the Lieutenant accomplished.

My knowledge of the events which transpired previously are limited to reports at this point in time. The Captain will detail a company to begin its investigations shortly, I am sure.

What concerns me at present, is the decision to transfer the protection of the Council to the militia. You specifically state that you do not wish the town to know what passes within the Council's meeting. Yet the guards will be townsfolk.

I suggest a compromise.

Councillor Kerrak al'Nerun still possesses military connections, and men loyal to him. I would suggest you entrust the security of the Council to the Councillor of Defense and Civil Security.

I pen this to inform you of recent changes to the managing of security for our next gathering -- and, furthermore, to thank Captain Daniels, Lieutenant Kilborn, 'Cy' Proxenus and Lord Tempestro for their most gracious offers of support and manpower. The Council, and indeed Myrken Wood, is in your debt. The changes are as follows:

With all due respect to the wisdom of 'Cy' Proxenus, I am unwilling to bow before the forces that seek to intimidate (or slaughter) us. We shall have the Meetinghouse for our venue, as we customarily do: I have taken the liberty of engaging carpenters under Judiciary aegis to see to the building's reconstruction, and expect work to be completed within a matter of days.

As concerns security: it is clear that the attack upon our persons was not the result of treason within Straka ranks, but an enchantment stemming from a yet-unnamed outside force. There is no guarantee that this will not occur a second time, when next we meet -- nor that it might not afflict persons other than Straka. This being so:

The Order of Straka will be in attendence at this meeting: they will provide no more than twenty persons, and I trust that the Captain will choose them carefully from amongst his men.

The Myrken Militia will be in attendence at this meeting: they will provide no more than twenty persons, and I trust that Proxenus will be as selective in their assembly.

Councilor al'Nerun's company will be in attendence at this meeting, with a force numbering no more than twenty men.

Lord Tempestro is invited to attend with what forces he chooses; they will number no more than twenty bodies.

General Sleipner, too, is invited to be in attendence: he is welcomed to assist the above-named gentlemen in the co-ordination of these various bodies, and to provide what manpower he sees fit -- to the limit of twenty additional persons.

Both I and Councilor Roschen, with whom I have consulted upon this matter, thank you, gentlemen, for your co-operation.
