Perhaps you have seen him in the Broken Dagger, or at the Nag's Head, or the Pryde of Myrken, or whatever tavern you happen to patronize. He stands out, somewhat. He certainly would stand out more elsewhere. In Myrken, dark cloaked, mysterious strangers are rather commonplace. You should realize he's been using that to his advantage.

He comes in to these establishments, usually a different one each night and sits down in the corner and drinks. Are you a bartender? Yes? Then he's no friend of yours. He comes in and sits in that corner. He doesn't cause the least bit of trouble. He doesn't spend a single shilling either. No, he brings his own wine, the sort who's name you've heard of but that you don't actually stock, from warmer climes, even south of the royal province. He brings his own bottle each and every night and drinks from it.

And all the while, he watches, and listens, and learns. There's a tendency for Myrkenfolk to speak their mind. They've little to lose that they haven't already lost once or twice. That's true with the high and the low alike. A man could learn a lot just by being around. All you need is an open mind.

The dark cloaked man has that in spades. An open mind and a shut mouth. You've never seen him ask a question. No, he does that in the dark, in places that you don't go, that you'd be a fool to go. Myrken may be out of the way. It may even be a little barbaric, but money speaks here as well as anywhere.

So while the Ashfiend lurks, the odd drow appears, criminals come and go, this man just calmly listens and waits. The stock of wine he has brought to Myrken still remains, and so long as it does, he remains as well.

Over the last many day, more whispers could be overheard if you were connected to the right people, quit comments, messages being passed. Certain things were made public, or at least a private sort of public. Near the top of this list was a notice for one Aeryn Karolinger, Ex-Marshall of the Brotherhood of Janeiro.

It was simply this: He would soon learn who provided for his pardon and why. All he had to do was keep his ears and eyes open and make himself available. There was future business to be done.
