Old Dogs enjoy old tricks

Wed Mar 17, 2004 3:16 am

Gerard wasn't one to mull about in the calm pacifist life he'd found isolated away from Myrken and the army. Even with the guise of a woodmans about him now sans that uniform he'd been so accustomed to for so long, he couldn't rid the urge for something a bit more exciting and exotic than fishing day in and out. What's more, the urge to make use of his growing talent with bow and arrow were driving him towards the destination he reached today.

Dressed without a hint of splendor, merely the simple clothes of heavier cloth many would wear outside the walls of civilization he'd make an effort to pass within the gates of the Gaol and seek out either Capt. Daniels or Lt. Kilborn with hopes of inquiring about a job. In a town like Myrken, more guards were always welcome were they not?

Fortune favoured some individuals more than others on any given day. On this occasion it was Gerard that enjoyed a spot of luck. A certain Lieutenant was actually present within the offices this afternoon, and after a short wait was willing to see the latest arrival.

Odd, Kilborn thought to himself. With the current situation that's developped in Myrken Wood, there hasn't been anyone actually looking to volunteer their services in a while. Adventurers and bounty hunters excluded.

A few papers were shuffled off to one side of the desk and a blank sheet drawn out in front of himself. I wonder if I should purchase a cherry pie or an apple pie to go with supper tonight

"That name sounds familiar." He mumbled briefly in addition, before leaning back in the chair to enjoy a moment of relaxation, before the job applicant was ushered in. The very first question was the obvious one.

"What can we do for you sir?"

The name was familiar, such could be taken so many ways in the perspective of things, perhaps his efforts against Audmathus would draw the most attention. But something to click the realization into place would perhaps be the blatantly obvious whom the name belonged two with the presence of one visually dominating penna of snowkiss white fanning out behind him once he'd entered the doorway to Kilborn's office.

Lips were touched just once by a flick of the tongue, perhaps his mind had wandered a bit to food as well, the timing was indeed right, and then he spoke... rough voice, short words.

"I'm looking for a job." No more or less was offered save the slightest of shifting of weight to lay heavy upon right foot.

It was entertaining, on occassion, the number of events that could take place in a region, which some individuals would have little knowledge of. Some events simply held more weight than others, and required different members of the force acting in different fashions. There was no recognition of Gerard in any visual format. Kilborn had left Daniels to his little peeve with the naked romping drow, and had stuck to other affairs himself. The man's verbosity at least got him studied for a few moments in minor curiousity.

"What sort of job? And why would you want to come to the Order of Straka?"

Nervous young fellow, ain't he?

Wed Mar 17, 2004 9:13 pm

"Lieutenant Kilborn, Sir. Lieutenant Duvall would like a word with you, whenever you can spare a momen..t..." The young guardsman flushed crimson, again, at the sight of Gerard in Kilborn's office.

"I didn't mean to interrupt," he said, swiftly. "Lieutenant Duvall says that you know his office hours. He says it has something to do with the Captain and the spires?"

He glanced at Gerard again. "My apologies Sir, messir." He quickly scurried out.

Flustered little interruption by the boyish guardsman cut off his first attempt to respond to Kilborn. Lips parted to begin his commentary fell short with the little display and inquiry put forth drew a faint smile across his lips that only lasted long enough for the newest entrant to depart.

Dark water eyes shifted back to his reason for being, as did mind as he pondered a moment on the best way to present the subject.

"Working as a guard, obviously." And wasn't it, though he supposed there were various duties within the Order. "And I wish to join because I'm no longer in a situation that lets me travel in the Duke's service, and I need work."

Work, yes, and the chance to slam the righteous boot of justice into the buttock of villiany and evil before moping the floor with said buttock to clear away the stains of unholy sin put forth by their evilly ways!

Thu Mar 18, 2004 9:54 am

There was a momentary distraction on Kilborn's part. Perhaps he spotted a giant miniature space hamster running along the wall and out the door discreetly. Perhaps it was the mention of the Duke that caused him to pause for a few moments.

"I take it that you have some experience working in such a fashion. Can you read and write? What capacity did you serve when you were working for the Duke?" A presumption on Kilborn's part to a degree. There was only one Duke that he knew about, though in theory, there could be several others out there. Somewhere. Over the rainbow.

Thu Mar 18, 2004 3:47 pm

Way up high, that's where he'd begun his service to the Duke, with both wings spread in areal scouting. Many a time he'd seen scarecrows about the fields and lions upon the edge of the woods. Such was the life, but no more was flight an option, clipped some time again. The faint memories sent a slightly dicomforted shift of arms to cross over his chest.

"I've served Duke Burel and Thessilane for 10 years and served everything from Marshall guard, to his personal guard, and a simple soldier on the line. I'd assume that would be fitting?" A convenient answer that would no doubt resolve both his questions in one need package. A fragile package likely kicked around before he delivered it, perhaps seeking a dog.

Wed Mar 24, 2004 8:54 am

It answered his question and then some really. There was the briefest little twitch of his lip for a half second, while he mulled some notions over his head for a few moments, before eventually taking a slow and cautious breath.

"Where would you envision yourself fitting best, within the Order of Straka?" He questioned curiousily. It made a relatively large difference, since there probably were not actual ranks that might be the equivalent of his experience. Of course, with any organization, there were those who'd risen the rank young, and some that were aged without ever gaining prestige. It was still a difficult wager, attempting to second guess where one of Gerard's stature might work their way in. So he questioned instead.

"What do you consider your area of expertise?" Better bloody well not be politics and diplomacy.

Wed Mar 24, 2004 9:57 am

A hand shifted up to rub across the healthy scruff he'd grown in the last week as he thought of where he truly felt the most comfortable. It wasn't exactly a tough realization, it was more a matter of where such was needed best in the guard, and how to aptly phrase it. In the end he prefered the blunter of approaches. Diplomacy wasn't his forte after all.

"I'd sooner crack someone over the head than do paperwork."

And in the end, Gerard wasn't the sort to seek much prestige, which would no doubt suit the man just fine.

Wed Mar 24, 2004 10:39 am

Sigh.

"You aren't the only one to have that particular out look."

He was going to have to send off a slew of the paperwork to the council. They could deal with the hassle of McCormick, who was arguing that the 3 sterlings per ten pounds he had agreed to charge the Order was before the transportation charge, and a protection fee, that effectively increased it to being 5 sterlings per ten pounds for the grain. Exorbinant, particularly since it'd been delivered two years ago now, and he was still hassling them. Just as well he was threatening to get the council in on the issue. Of course, the council would probably wind up agreeing in his favour, which suited Kilborn just fine. There was a clause in the agreement between the Order of Straka and the Myrken Wood government that the goverment would cover any unexpected miscellaneous expenses, which is what Kilborn had filed this under. Of course, that was only one headache that constantly seemed to work its way to the top of the paperwork pile.

"You've obviously got experience running with these sorts of duties, so we won't waste your time or our resources with any fashion of formal training."

Another minor pause, while Kilborn wracked his mind for some issues that needed to be resolved. There was one conversation with Duvall he had enjoyed recently, which included one or two obvious deficiencies in the ranks.

"Now I'm not aware of what sort of salary the Duke provided you with, but our purses are not that deep here. Figure I can get you in ranked as a Private. Step up from Guardsman, and a bit better pay."

A second pause, before he lifted his eyes to look Gerard dead in the eye.

"I don't suppose you have any familiarity with the Broken Dagger Tavern do you? There's a sterling raise for anyone willing to voluntarily patrol that region of land." Kilborn offered with a pleasant looking smile that bordered on hopeful.

Wed Mar 24, 2004 12:40 pm

"Not suprising."

A faint smile cracked across his face with his possible bosses rebutle, who did enjoy filing through papers in this day in age. Being active was far more fulfilling.

A nod for the experience, and still in decent shape thanks to habits that just wouldn't break. Burel had trained him well enough in that regard, weapons were part of his creed, and he's even begun exploring the idea of projectiles; Bow and arrow, and the like.

"I'm not looking for much. I'm well enough off, I just need a little extra for something personal, and the simple funds to save."
Ah, wasn't he being rather reasonable, but then again he wasn't skilled enough in much else to seek a job at another local within the town.

A slightly uncomfortable shift passed over him with the comment of the Dagger, the epicenter of every single issue to arise in the town. But with a resigned sigh his head shook in soft attempt to hide the look on his face.

"Quite familiar, I suppose I could survive patrolling the area, just give me a -very- large sword."
