To whom it may concern.

For a stretch of water that has been subjected to so much strangeness over the years, which has been the focus of so many unusual events and the resting place of so many terrible secrets, this latest discovery in the Silver Lake might almost be considered beneath notice. Unpleasant, certainly, but not immediately remarkable.

Yet another body, in a land that might once have counted corpses its most bountiful crop; it appears first as a dark shape breaking up the dance of summer sunlight on the shallows not far from where the West Mavoiir feeds into the lake. Quite dead, and not all that recently - some weeks, maybe; enough for decay to bring it bobbing back to the surface. A moderately well-built man, for all that bloated flesh strains at sodden clothing. Some incongruity there: his heavy boots are better suited to a labourer, while his stained garments are of a more fashionable cut than the cheap fabric really warrants; a knife is tucked into his boot, and a leather sap filled with lead shot weighs down one of his coat pockets. An empty skin of the sort used to carry water or wine or some other liquid flaps limply at his side, its narrow strap tangled about his neck and arm.

The most unusual - unsettling - feature is the man's face - a livid horror of scratches and cuts, furrows gouged across waterlogged brow and cheeks and chin as if scourged; they cluster closest about what was once the wretch's mouth, now little more than a ragged hole lined with broken and uneven teeth, unable to close around the fistfuls of forest leaf-mould packed tightly between gaping jaws.
Nothing so bold as a miller's shirt, that every morning collars a thief.
