A good time for fishing

The large man easily knocked the crying child away from Cat and the squid, the boy scrambling away to give way to his much stronger rescuers. The true battle began then as the monster in the water recognized the threat that was posed to it. Tentacles fighting tentacles was a surprise to the beast which momentarily meant that it gave way on it's grip on the child, it's appendages moving in a disorganized fashion to try to fight off it's two attackers. A tentacle thrashed up from the water creating a great wave as it thumped down in Kals' direction while it's remaining appendages focused on N'vek. He couldn't drown the boy but he could try to squeeze him to death, which was exactly what those tentacles were moving to try to do.

Sprier and soon enough in his element. The lake was his domain - or seemed like it anyway. While he seemed easily subdued and beaten on land? The tables were turned underwater.Even though his opponent had the same advantage plus size. He may be the smaller squid, but that made N`vek faster and more agile. He'd bite, snapping that sharp almost beak-like jaw of his on what was in reach, he'd coil his own tentacles around he much larger ones. Tooth-lined suckers seeking to dig into the larger cephalopod and tear off chunks. Colors flared, sending messages in Squid to the attacking monster to get away. Stay away. Clinging and circling, holding himself close to that giant limb, hoping that himself coiled meant that the beast couldn't do the same. Threat colors ceased as N`vek was starting to feel spooked himself. Colors changed from a threat display to the trick of You will die if you eat me colors. Those beautifully colorful designs. What a spot to find himself in. Coiled around a tentacle of a beast that was now trying to squeeze him. So happy he had gills.

He wasn't going diving into the water to wrestle with things that had twice as many limbs as him, so as soon as the squid's tentacle loosed on Cat he'd reach out and try to shove her rather forcefully way from the water at the same time that tentacle slammed into his back, letting out a pained grunt from the man.

He'd roll, attempting to escape any second strike or an effort to wrap him up much as it had Cat, and try to give himself some breathing room. "You two need to get away from the water!" Obviously, but sometimes kids needed a good yelling at to get them motivated.

The tentacle loosened. This was met by silence, at first, but as Kals thrust the child away, the urchin's body writhed, sucking in a great gasp of air. Enough to allow the waif to scrabble unsteadily to firmer ground. Lurching rather alarmingly from side to side, Cat still had enough sense to reach out and grab for Joseph's shirt. Kals' words were enough to convince the urchin (if previous events had not) that here was not a good place to be and so the blonde child - looking a little worse for the wear - tried to urge the other child further away from the lake shore. "KILL IT GOOD!" The waif found enough air to shriek.

A number of interesting things occurred next. The tall man was hit with the tentacle, but that limb went sliding back into the water, the creature unable to control it's limbs with total independence from one another and it was too much for it to focus on the battle on land and the series of multiple attacks that came from within the water. The smaller squid was a much bigger threat than anything that was coming from land.

It was a great question if the squid understood the warning colors and the messages the smaller one was sending, it's limbs continuing to writhe and squeeze at the other creature. Where a smaller tentacle wrapped a larger one would return the effort, trying to coil about and squeeze with that gripping force.

It was with the first victory had by the smaller squid that the battle would begin to turn. The sharp beak of N'vek bit through one of the tentacles, the creature thrashing in the water with pain, creating great waves that came up splashing over the bank, throwing fish and algae up towards the trio that were still gathered there. As the limb came free N'vek would feel a sudden absence. Where once the giant crushing tentacle had been, now there would be nothing. There was no severed tentacle left writhing in the water nor upon the land nor left in the smaller squid's beak. It was as if it had never been there to begin with, were it not for the bleeding stump that was left behind and the true pain that it's victim's would feel for the efforts that tentacle had made.

The Giant squid would redouble it's efforts, driven forth by the pain that it felt, but it was losing the battle, twisting about in the water as N'vek took hold of it's limbs and continued his snapping, freeing another tentacle from it's body, vanishing just as the first had.

On the bank Joseph moved easily away with Cat, shaking in his wet clothes. The lad clearly traumatized.

There was still much thrashing and hissing from the smaller squid. Confusion clawing at the squid instinct part of the boy's brain. Where was the missing tentacle? That was his prize! More threat display colors, his own smaller set of tentacles flaring and fanning out with the most outrageous patterns as N`vek sought to make himself appear larger and scarier. He was not without wounds though, slash marks and gouges littered his flesh where the larger squid attempted to pry him off. At least two tentacles down, as a full squid that meant eight more... N`vek tried for a different target, under water now. Going for the thing's head, it's eyes, some sort of weak point! Colors shifted, tentacles looking nearly flat, stripes flashing and moving in ripples. He continued to use his smaller size to hopefully not get too injured by the remaining tentacles. Tried to weave and dodge and deal damage to the head.

Kals could do little in the water besides get in the way and cause a mess. Because of this he opted to follow his on advice and scuttle away from the shoreline before another tentacle finally decided to shoot out of the water and take a crack at him.

The trade dragged himself to his feet, grunting at the bruise he swore he could feel forming on his back, and adjust the veil that covered his face as he turned to look towards the lake and where he thought N'vek to be. Cait let out her encourage me and he gave the kid a long look. "You okay?"

Cat was bruised in body, but not in spirit. So long as other people were around, at least. Cat has a reputation to uphold and it wouldn’t do to let Joseph see it falter. So. “I’m okay.” The child said, staring in fascination past Kals at the two squids. “But Joseph here, iffen he goes home an’ tells his momma that he didn’t get no butter at the market ‘cause a giant squid smooshed the basket, he gonna get a whuppin’. His momma ain’t gonna believe that none.” And there wasn’t much Cat could do about that (other than possibly steal some butter), but maybe grown ups could convince Joseph’s mother.

While Joseph just sat quietly in the background letting Cat and Kals discuss his fate with his mother the battle of the squids continued in the water.

N'vek had no trouble finding the thing's massive head and it's eyes and while his smaller body weaved in and out of those tentacles looking for weak points he would surely notice the disparity between how this creature fought and how he would expect it to fight. The beast seemed fully unaware of the threat patterns or of the fact that it's head might even be targeted. All of it's effort had been put forth into those crushing tentacles. With that being what it was the beast was surprised by the attacks to it's head, eyes lost almost immediately and the viewers from above could see tentacles thrashing in the water, trying to find it's smaller attacker. The beast flailed about without sight as the resilient little squid continued his effort, working his way into damaging the giant squid's critical organs. As the his sharp beak severed that which seemed to be keeping the giant squid alive the whole thing would disappear just as the tentacles had, vanishing as if it had never existed at all, leaving a sudden calm in the water other than where N'vek might still be reaching for the squid that no longer exists.

The fish that had been caught up in the matter seemed rather confused, finally swimming away as there was nothing there to attract them any longer, and yet the results of the battle were still quite real, the wounds that the beast had caused would remain, the water that had sloshed up over the bank was still present, but no longer did the culprit linger in the waters. It would be difficult to convince the poor child's mother that anything had ever been there at all.

Gnash. Gnash. Writhe. Then nothing. N`vek blinked, breathing intensifying. Instincts had the boy stirred into almost a frenzy, his own wounds and the scent of blood in the water fueling it. Imagine the squidling's surprise when the object of all that simply vanished. Confusion just like the little fish had felt - like those on the land were certainly feeling as well. And also like the fish, the giant squid's absence meant that N`vek no longer had the Squid instinct to remain here and chase off the threat/eat the spoils, the more human side of him was swiftly returning to control.

Pain and a good bit of fear and shock over realizing what he had done - maybe even amazement, N`vek made his way back to shore, warning threat color displays diminishing only to be replaced by a paler version of his defaulted scheme.

"Is Ev...ry one Okay?" And then he slumped over. Once again, he'd lost a tentacle and just when the other one had fully grown back. At least it hadn't been the same one as before. There were also a series of sucker wounds and other deep scratches. Discolored bruises of murky blues and deep purples that were in no way part of his color changing trick.

Alive, but in a lot of pain.

Kals didn't respond to Cat at first, not until the thing in the lake had stopped making a fuss. He wasn't entirely sure what that meant until N'vek came lurching out of the water. He looked down at the pair from behind the veil and made a noncommittal grunt. "I'll take Joseph home and talk to them in a few minutes."

Then N'vek muttered something and collapsed on the ground. That had Kals running over to check if the boy was alive. On closer look the kid certainly looked like hell. Assuming he was still with them Kals would try and pick the kid up, ignoring the pain in his back at the effort from where he was struck. "First, I need to take him to get looked after." The normal doctor? Did the people at the Rememdium know how to help a squid? Who'd take care of him after the incident with Kacela?

Well. The giant squid-demon was dead. Or, at least, vanquished. Cat wasn’t yet sure which would make the better story – and would have to decide that in short order! The little squid demon looked rather like he’d passed out (and really, Cat couldn’t fault him for that). The blonde urchin had made a play to Kals for Joseph’s benefit, and now that was up to the grown-up. He might just be weird enough to distract Joseph’s mother from beating the boy anyway. All those veils and whatnot. Weird, right?

“Good job killing it!” The child (having decided to declare it dead) shrills to the slumped over N’vek. Yes, he did look like he needed some taking-care-of. “…D’they take care o’ little squid demons at th’ Rememdium?” The child asked Kals curiously, ignoring the pain that was steadily growing in ribs. Something had cracked there but the urchin knew better than to show pain. Not in front of Joseph, anyway. “Joseph, you go wi’ th’grownups, okay? Tell me iffen y'see any werewolves what eat kids, okay?” And Cat was edging back towards the path to the tavern.

The giant squid was gone, but little Joseph would likely be so traumatized from the event he'd probably never go near the lake again, or disobey his mother. It took a long time for the child to register that it really was all over, the child standing away from the others, completely still and just staring as he watched people hovering around the smaller squid and the veiled man actually heft the strange creature up and into his arms. His Mother was right, he should never wander where he wasn't supposed to. It was Cat's voice that would bring him out of his stupor and he'd look towards Cat as the other child started edging away and he'd nod a little before finally speaking in a shaky voice. "Oh-okay." He'd just creep forward a little bit closer towards Kals and the little squid, but that was as much as he was going to put into it.
