Shadow and Flame

Glimmershade

A whirlwind of cold rage preceded Glimmershade down the deep tunnels, and behind him he trailed a path of lingering shadows, withered bodies and the stench of scorched dragonflesh. He muttered to himself in his own language, the cool insouciance he maintained in his humanshape left far behind in the smouldering heat of Drache's Lair. She had beaten him! That huge fact, accompanied by the claw and fang and magic-inflicted wounds across his body, was almost too much for him to bear. He came across a small party of drow and slaked his temper on them, descending out of the darkness with his translucent black wings spread like a mantle of death. It didn't help, and he still felt Drache's fires lashing across his neck and ribs even as he lounged next to an underground lake, chewing on an ebon-skinned corpse. He had thought it would be an easy feat, skulking down into the half-breed's Lair and catching her unawares, and then spiriting her off into -his- domain to be a lovely personal plaything. Or a trophy, depending on how much trouble she gave him. And after he was done with her, he had a buyer.

It was a testament to his youth that he had been so under-prepared to deal with the fire-drake. He hadn't expected her to change shapes, to become a radiant blood-and-fire she-drake far larger than he. His only consolation was that he had wounded her grievously before turning tail, and had left her child dead with his energy-draining breath weapon. He felt a twinge of panic, and lifted his narrow head to peer back the way he had come lest she be pursuing him even now. He would be back for her, oh yes. But the tunnels were silent and cool and dark. From the other direction he heard something moving nervously through the darkness and turned with an angry hiss. "Yes? What is it?" The bug-eyed goblin cleared his throat and shuffled forward, clearly not keen on leaving the perceived security of the stone wall behind him.

"Master, the latest group is ready to depart. They are waiting to see if you are bringing the half-breed." Mersh snarled threateningly, especially when he caught how the wretch's eyes scoured across the crusted wounds on his hide.

"Tell them to get going. The fire-drake will not be part of the deal, but I expect the same payment we agreed on before." The goblin, Gorf or Lorm or something like that, made a choking sound, "...but!"

And Mersh flared his tattered wings and lunged towards the hapless creature, this throat rumbling with anger. "No buts! You can tell the black elves that I should be charging them double anyways, even without a red half-dragon. Most of this shipment is humans, and young ones too. If they want to complain tell them to send their own raiding parties into Myrken and next time I'll send them goblins!"

Some of his growls were those of satisfaction as Lorm cowered against the floor and pissed himself. His frilled tail swept back and forth, inches from the water, as he let the message sink in. Finally he let his crest relax and shifted down into his humanoid form. He flexed his long pale fingers and raked them through the soft flaxen hair that feel in a sheet to his shoulders. It was not a form that reflected his age. By all rights he would have been more truthful in the shape of a teenager. He turned his back on the quaking goblin and wandered over to the drow he had slaughtered before, inspecting the house symbols on their clothes and grinning at the fact that he knew there would be no retaliation for the death of these. The dark elves were smart, and the loss of a few lowly males was just the price of doing business with a shadow dragon. He took from them any objects he found interesting and pocketed them, turning back to Lorm.

"Go get my chamber ready, and have my entertainment waiting. Make sure she's a screamer."
