Of third eyes and second chances

The trees dropped away rapidly as Drache's red form shot skyward with a straining thump of leathery wings. Chuckling in earnest as dark smoke streamed behind her, she tucked her wings until only the outer phalanges were spread at her sides and plunged, spinning back down towards the trees. Arcing her back and pulling out of the dive, she was suddenly streaming back towards the fae.

~~~~~ Zilliah ~~~~~
She wouldn't find him so frightened of her today. If she had expected him to flee her turn about in fear, she would be mistaken. He's coming right for her, closing the distance between them rapidly. To the side he careens, avoiding a collision, or worse, her actually trapping him like a bug between fang and claw. The jewels on his wings and glowing with some inner fire now and they fold back against his body as he twists in midair, arm outstretched to run golden finger tip over the leather of her wing. It all happens in a split second though it slows like honey in his mind. No sooner than she felt those cool fingers on her wing, he would be out of reach again, flying straight up into the heavens.
As they came close to each other, the half-drake tilted to the other side blowing past Zilliah with a wash of hot air. The reach of his hand was not avoided. He was close enough for a few brief moments to see the expression of delighted excitement on her scaly face. There was a hiss of indrawn breath and the puffed at him, enveloping him in a benign cloud of red smoke that trailed streamers after both of them as they flew on.
As with the other times she had seen him fly, the display is short lived. He burst up through the cloud of smoke, spun round with a flourish of wings and then dipped down to dive back to his grove. He alights back onto his stone dais, legs bent in a crouch with golden hands touching the smooth surface by tender fingertips. Wings fold slowly before blinking away, leaving only those emerald gems embedded in his flesh.
His once still heart beat fast, though not the terrified pitter patter it made when he was frightened. He was not a great drake or a bird. Whatever limitations his abilities had, they must have reached a threshold and he could go on no more. There may have been a time, long long ago, when he could have sailed the skies so naturally, so easily, but no more. But those were the times before the Eye. His wings had been first to go. Or had they? Were they even his to begin with? All he could remember of that time was the pain, excruciating and terrible. He felt a twinge of it every time he called them forth but he was so used to it by now that he hardly noticed it.
He looks to the sky with his dead eyes, watching Drache descend. She made it look so very simple. He smiled at her and lowers himself down so that he is sitting on the edge of the platform, legs dangling. Dusted fingers yank and pull his hair round so that it falls across his bare chest. He works at it, undoing what locks still try to stay plaited together with deft digits.
The half-dragon frolicked across the sky, arcing back around to make another pass at her impromptu playmate, only to find that the fae was once again abandoning their play. Her temper flared in an instant and she grimaced hotly. Why must he continue to tease her so?
Nostrils smoking irritably, her wings snapped out to arrest her plummet back towards the glen and she circled back towards the mountains. The main reason she had decided to stop and visit forgotten as she decided she had no more patience for this fae and his cruel jests.
It never occured to her that Zilliah wasn't flying with her anymore because he couldn't.
He grinned as Drache began to descend, but it was short lived on his lips, soon to be replaced with a dark frown as she left. His hands fly free from his hair and he waves them about in the air to try and signal to her. The gold was not as shiny and gleaming as it had been before she arrived, a good deal of it lost to his weapons and now his hair. She either failed to see him or ignored it and he became even more frustrated.
He jumps to his feet and calls out to her, hands cupped round his mouth. “Drache! Come back!” Did she mean for him to follow? No, she looked angry. His hands clench into fists and he calls out to her now mentally though he knows it would be risky. He does not try to speak, knowing that had not worked in the past with her. The light on his forehead blazes to life and he tries to reach into her mind and let his presence be known. The recoil of it drops him to his knees and he rubs his palms into his eyes, smearing gold and yellow pollen.
The touch on her mind was welcome, yet unexpected and therefore painful as her mangled inborn talent for telepathy sought to wreak havoc. Widespread wings shuddered briefly on their cushion of air as her thoughts turned inwards to focus on and sooth the instinctive blaze at the alien contact. She was lucky that her slow glide didn't take her into the treetops. Gritting her fangs grimly and arching her back swiftly, she turned back.
Drache's taloned feet gripped the edge of the raised stone as the rush of wind from her landing blew past her and she crouched, mantling the fae with her warm wings. She was confused and angry, still not knowing when Zill was toying with her and when he was being sincere. Perhaps she would never know. Too many misunderstandings like these and she would simply lose patience and begin actively driving him away. But her heart was soft and her expression one of concern. She was too human to go through life without friends, and another near-eternal like the lavender-eyed fae would be a treasure indeed.
Warm clawed fingertips touched his chin and his shoulder as she bent down to look into his face. "Zilliah?" she asked with a soft hiss.
Even here in his glade, his haven of safety, he could not help but be a little frightened of her anger. His eyes widen as clawed digits take hold of his face and he tries not to flinch. One wrong move and he could end up with a gash like Kira had. Flecks of yellow and metal swim over the uniform surface of his orbs from where he had ground fist into eye in pain. A trembling hand smudged with dandelion remnants and fading gold dust takes hold of a clawed finger and he tries to brave a smile.
“Why are you leaving?” He looked confused, excited, upset and frightened all at once and it made his lips twitch and eye brows bunch and relax as all the emotions tried to fight for a hold on his handsome face. Why was she angry at him? Was she playing with him now?
When it came to people showing fear of her, Drache had definite mixed feelings. On the one claw, it could be extremely satisfying to know that her mere presence could have such an effect. Such power in naught but simple posturing, the right glare, and a sinister growl. Accomplishing that sort of domination made her feel closer to her full-blooded ancestors who commanded a much more frightful presence and Dragonfear. But on the other, it was extremely disheartening and lonely when her draconic nature so often stood in the way of all things social.
She couldn't help but notice Zill's frightened reaction and the dejection ignited by that simple tremor and -that- look almost sent her skyward once more. Only the grip on her hand held her in check.
"Why? Because you weren't flying with me anymore. You asssk me to, and then you come back to the ground. Why? I thought it perhapsss sssome ploy to get me to leave?" Once upon a time she would have simply spat that last sentence as an accusation. But now it was more of a question as she looked at him worriedly, almost embarassedly, asking him to tell her she'd been wrong.
This wouldn't be the first time he'd let his foolish assumption that those who could not be touched with his mind knew what he was thinking. The fear he had felt was unintentional and more primal instinct than anything and he fought hard now to squash the look on his face. His face reflects her own hurt. She thought he wanted her to go? After he had welcomed her so into his very home? His mind reels as he wants to laugh at her, slap her, or cry all at once. If he had pupils to find her own, to look her dead on in the eye, he would be doing that right now. Only he couldn't and she would only see the swirl of yellow and orange against the pale backdrop of milky lavender.
“If I didn't want you here I would have just told you to go. I asked you to fly with me and we did. I cannot help it that I can't keep going the way you can.” Was that shame on his features now? It made his insides churn to admit to her that he could not do something. He looks away from her now, avoiding looking into those reptilian eyes now that he has admitted his inadequacy.
The half-dragon watched the play of emotions across Zill's body with a certain amount of wariness. As he said, this was -his- home and she wasn't entirely sure she was safe in it. His eyes might be lacking when it came to revealing his feelings, but the rest of him wasn't exempt from scrutiny. Her gaze traveled between all three of his eyes and she tried to understand him and hopefully clear up this misunderstanding.
"Si mi mishun vi hofiba," she muttered in a self-admonishing tone. "I am glad to know you would have told me. I didn't realize your wings weren't the bessst for enduranccce flying. But I'd wager you're far more agile than I," she said earnestly with a fangy smile. He knew far too much about her own inadequacies for her to have any room complaining about his. She ended her crouch by plopping down onto the stone on her behind, tail draping down over the edge and legs pulled up in an odd semblance of his usual lotus pose.
He was glad now that she wasn't able to link with his mind. He did not want her to feel the awful hate he had for himself when it came to his wings. They were both a great source of pride and vanity while also being one of his greatest shames. They came second only to the failure that was his third eye and she now dared to look right at it as well. So very few bothered or dared to gaze into it, whether out of ignorance or fear. But she always looked right into it, didn't she? This too brought forth mixed emotions to war inside him. Was she trying to find fault in him and point them out? He was more accustomed to being fawned over and praised for his looks. He could take people finding flaws in his personality or his cold meanness, but he was fiercely vain and could not abide by anyone finding something distasteful about his appearance.
The chaos of thought was flooding his mind so much that he starts to move and fold his legs up just the way she had without even realizing he is doing it. His brows furrow and he leans forward to try and adjust her feet a little to correct her stance. He has grown silent again but he is smiling at least and the fear beating in his chest has subsided.
Drache did always look into his third eye, a habit that originated in fear and now continued out of some need to recognize and respect its presence. How could she fail to do so, being what she was? Too different from either of her parent races to be accepted by either she was always intrigued by those who were simply 'different'. Even when they started off being mean to her.
To be fair, she'd said nothing about his appearance. Being unsuited to the type of flying she prefered had nothing to do with how his wings looked. But he'd attacked her appearence before so it was a topic she shied away from.
As his hands gripped her raptor-like feet she flexed them, trying to adjust. It was difficult with the elongated ankles like the back legs similar to a dog or other creature.
He was patient and careful as he worked her feet round until he felt they looked placed properly. In turn, he mirrors the stance, his own limbs moving with fluid like grace, the weird angles and bending required coming all to easy to him, He takes a deep breath and sits up tall and straight. He pressed his golden palms together in front of his chest and exhales, eyes closing slowly. Another breath in and out. He peeks an eye open to see if Drache is following his lead. Not that he couldn't see her plain enough with them closed, but the whole facial gesture was meant to ensure she knew what he expected of her. Had she ever meditated before, he wondered?
It wasn't the position the dragoness normally preferred for such things, but she would make do. Her back straightened, pushing out her feminine bust and the small swell of her belly while letting her wings fluff out stiffly before dropping back, relaxing over the edge of stone until they hugged the sides of the round sun-warmed dias. She breathed in deeply and exhaled, the breath out sounding a low purr of the sort that might be terrifying in the dark. Zill's quick peek would reveal that not only was the dragoness following his lead, though she didn't quite know why, she seemed to know what she was doing. Her taught athletic body was relaxing, muscles going slack under their crimson armour, the creeping python of her tail settling around the curves of her thighs. She didn't press her palms together in front of her chest, choosing instead to rest them palms-up on her knees, clawed fingers limp. In a few short moments the most movement coming from her was the occasional lift of a coarse black tendril of her hair as it was teased by the summer breeze. That and the swirling drift of smoke from her thin nostrils, resuming now that she had no more attention to spare on keeping it stifled. Her eyelids closed, only a crescent of amber visible. The fact of her Blindsense made the process almost easy, her thoughts drifting away almost smokelike themselves in the face of the primal sensing of the forest around her. Without any particular subject or question or object to meditate upon, it would not be long until she entered a state of trancing. She was beautiful there in the dappled summer sun as it streamed through the trees, caught in a moment of serenity made all the more breath-taking considering her predatory nature. It was unfortunate that many would never see her as anything more than a beast.
