Maelstrom and Koudoa Vortex had flown a very long distance. In the depths of the night, their wings strained to keep them in the air. It had been several nights of the same. They could not wait to find their home and rest. For Koudoa, it would be the first time seeing it. Maelstrom landed at the front of the overgrown cliff face, that through illusion and time, hid the entrance to a cavern fit for a beast of his magnitude. With a few short gestures, the wards recognized their master and pulled back, the pathways straightened and made way to the heart of the mountains. With just a couple more.. numerous traps throughout their pathway disarmed. He would take a few minutes to show Koudoa the same gestures, to make sure she could repeat them with precision and without error. "Remember.. a mistake in the disarming process.. could end your life. I will go first."
He moved in ahead of her, he was mostly confident in his abilities not to have forgotten anything after all the time away, but he would not risk the life of his love on the possibility he might fail. The lair was his fortress, a place of solitude, a place of rest.. a place warded many fold over from intruder and foe. But as any good weapon, used wrong, the magic here was as lethal to himself as much as was death's own scythe.
As he moved in, a lair, mostly consistent of books remained in tact. Koudoa was flummoxed, "But you hardly ever read?" She asked.. "Yet your entire lair is books..."
"The past few years, we have been to busy surviving, with me focused upon our survival for me to do much in the way of reading my love. I will resume my old pass-time now that my wretched brother has met his final end. Wretched necromancy.. and to think at one time I even considered partly dabbling in that dark art." He sighed
"Its okay my love. You did what was right. He may have been part of you, but he was the worst of you." She did a few gestures which re-closed the lair and its locks and paths behind them. She was always the one to remember to lock the door behind them.
Watching her, Maelstrom commented, "I need be careful. Years of preparedness training are going down the tube. Just because my brother is dead does not mean all my struggles are at an end."
She moved to his side, curling up against him. "You are just tired. You're also hurt. I am not surprised you are listless. Lay down, let me take care of you."
He nodded, stretching out revealing nasty gashes upon his chest.
She examined him.. trying not to cry at the fact her beloved was harmed. She could tell the wounds had nearly been fatal, striking over the heart but fortunately not an angle that cut between the ribs. "It was a close battle." She commented softly.
"It was necessary. It had to end.. it was one or the other of us.. we could not exist in this world at the same time." He sighed. "What a grand mistake he was."
She stroked his neck gently and watching his hand gestures for guidance, used white vinegar and alcohol to cleanse the wounds. She would them cover them in cleaned leaves, stitched with vine. "You only did what you thought was right. If I had been around I would have encouraged you fight your evil within you... not divide yourself and then destroy that half of you." She nosed him gently with her snout against his jaw. "Seems it was just as bad to fight it outside of you as within..."
"I am just glad it's over and we are home..." He drifted off into exhausted slumber as she tended his wounds.
