Jacob Cutter, Where are you?

Postby Khalika » Thu Jul 12, 2007 5:00 pm

Khalika observed from a safe distance watching the men as they worked, it didn't take long till she distingished the man who calls himself Jacob Cutter. the way he worked and the way his men seems to react to him, gave her a moments frown. Perhaps Smilin'Tom was zigzagging the truth. Not that it matters now. He was taking the long nap.

She took a wide birth around the frame work it self, following and watching Jacob Cutter, one of the torches snuffed out with a bit of water she carries. giving her a small line of darkness to work with. she was swift, and soon she stood but a few feet from him...

"Jacob Cutter, We need to speak about a conversation you had in Myrken, about a message you left...It can be in private if you wish, or I can let your fellow workers, know who you have had past dealing with....Will they be so willing to work if they discovered you coin came from a Witch?...

She would wait now...Wait for his reaction, and his responce

Quickly he would drag her off without so much as a word, but gently, oh because no matter how her words belied any hint of feminism, she was no man, and he would not treat a woman roughly. Outside the circle of torches a ways sat a moderate sized tent with a torch of its own outside. This was mainly used for rest, should any of the men find themselves exhausted by the heat, but alongside the cot it held was a small desk, and a pair of roughly hewn chairs. Here Jacob Cutter would sign the papers and write out the supply orders, and tonight it was where he would tell his tale.

"You may not be caring, Miss.." She had given him no name to call her, but little did that matter now, "but I've need to be done with this all. To be frank, I was surprised none'd come sooner. This is where we'll begin it, for every man has a reason to deal with what devils come to him."

From the desk it was drawn, his security for himself and his men, and the promise of his future. He could scarcely read half the words on the parchment, but at the top the word "Contract" was scripted in large, bold letters, and three names signed at the bottom: Jacob Cutter, Mr. Joshua Hollgate, and Earnst M. Goodrich, Esq. It was a fine piece of legal work, drawn up by the local barrister, which made it nigh impossible for Mr. Hollgate to refuse wages or final payment for the work done. Fortunately, Goodrich was true to his reputation of honesty, and had refused to write in any of the loopholes Hollgate had attempted to "persuade" him to add.

"This, and my way out of your god forsaken Myrken. That's what the coin had bought me, and if I could have done it another way.." The man simply shook his head. The work of a barrister did not come cheap, especially when the man in question was so respectable. "She didn't ask me for nothing more than you know I've done, other than to be gone far and fast, for my own sake. Frightening that, wasn't sure if I were threatened or warned." Cutter shrugged his broad shoulers and let out a deep sigh. It was hardly a surprise all this had come back to haunt him, but he had begun to hope he was clear of it all.

"She were a little thing. Near no meat at all, and sized so her head couldn't have reached within a hand's breath of my heart. Her hair was a mess of curls and something like flame, or blood maybe; it was witch's hair done up right like in one of those tales they tell the young ones." He hesitated then, both trying to recall the woman, and at the same time attempting not to get her image stuck fast in his mind. "Eyes were.. blue, maybe green. I tried not to look in 'em for fear I'd wake up as a pig in a sty. Not much else I can recall.."

He would be visibly relieved to be done with this account, and dreading any questions she might pose in response. Jacob was a very superstitious man, as many of his class were wont to be, and it was not hard at all for him to recall stories of men and women alike burned for even slight association with someone who looked as this woman had.

The Gypsy listened in silence, no questions...No pressing inquiries...He seemed to want to spill as much as Smilin'Tom.....When he paused...she looked at him through the dark... A single question upon her lips..

"Did she give a name?....

"Names? Man'd be a fool to ask such a woman what her name were, Miss. Don't reckon she'd be inclined to answer, either." He would fall silent at that, and await judgment. A man was accountable for his own actions, no matter the circumstances, and this man wasn't about to start squealing like a pig just to try and avoid the consequences.

Was there anything else?...

She responded, in kind, her patience growing thin as he is not giving her as much as she had hoped...

"Any hint she worked with another? or reason given as to why she wanted the gift given?

A pause as a thought occured...

"Where did you meet her?, Would she come to you?..Or did she give you means of finding or summoning her"

Yes a plan was building, sudden and swift.....

"I saw no others, and she paid me well enough not to ask, not that I'd be wanting to know a witch's motivations."

He was growing uneasy with too many questions he simply did not have much of an answer for, if at all. She did not act like a daft woman, and yet it seemed not to be sinking in that no man in his right mind would have sought to know more about such a person than absolutely necessary. At last she would ask something he'd have slightly more of an answer for, if not exactly what she was after..

"She stopped me on the road, came out of the woods like she'd always been there, just waiting for me to come along. Asked where I was going, and my thoughts on Myrken. I told her it was a dangerous place, and that I was just passing through, as fast as I might. That was when she made her offer. All the instructions were given then and there, and the thing she left for him she gave to me. I was paid then as well, and warned against treachery. Last she said was that I'd be well to be on my way as fast I could; none would fair well in Myrken this season."

He would pause and consider his words then, hazel eyes squinting as he sought the corners of his mind, sifting through memories for any details he had missed. It was a tricky thing, recalling memories he had tried so hard to renounce, and he found himself grasping at straws. Just what could she need that he might yet know?

"She was a sad thing, all quiet doom and.. Were like talking to someone who had forseen end times, and was just waiting for that fateful date to roll 'round. Only other thing, she had with her a satchel. Just a plain sort of thing, save it had too many straps going on, like she were going to harness it to something."
