A minute passed, then five, and perhaps ten and even more as the members of the Violet Dawn went about their daily routine. Even with the advent of autumn the garden yet bore plentiful vegetables for their tables in answer to prayers that were more often smiled and savored than cajoled and wrung. For many, who desired only a simple life, it was enough to tend to the fields with a humble strength, spared in reflection of the rude stranger who appeared and demanded and threatened. He threatened those who no longer knew fear.
Yet he sought out their guru. With more smiles and private nods of their heads, the farmers turned their thoughts inward, outward, to the united rhythm of their hearts that beat only for the Violet Dawn. The cool sunlight glistened on their dew-drop sweat and the dark circles that adorn their foreheads.
It was only a quiet heartbeat later when a stranger made his presence known with the gentle crunch of tilled earth beneath a soft boot.
"I assure you brother," a pale countenance bore thin lips and served as a home for deep-set, obsidian eyes framing an aquiline nose. A simple white, cotton shirt hugged a lean frame while black clung to his extremities and legs that painted him in contrasting extremes. A slow smile uncoiled across the length of painfully slender lips while he cocked his head aside, studying the stranger while the tilt of his head allowed a captive ebony ponytail to brush across a dark cloak draped over one shoulder.
"That we are the unwelcome guests in Myrken Wood. And for no ill that we have done." With each syllable his feet fell in a ghostly rhythm behind it, off-beat and pacing their words as he drifted in a slow, loose circle about the message-bearer.
"But," he purred in a resonant voice. "There is no need for such crude boldness, brother. Not among us." Hands sheathed in taut leather clasped at the small of his back as he paused beside this stranger, angling his visage once more to gaze squarely upon this new arrival. With the tilt of his head every farmer did likewise, at one heartbeat, angle their eyes and tanned, weathered features towards this one who trumpeted and demanded things of them. Calloused knuckles wound tighter about hafted, sharpened farming implements.
"For what reason do you seek me?"
If you are near to the dark
I will tell you about the sun
You are here, no escape
From my visions of the world
You will cry, all alone
But it does not mean a thing to me...
